Manny won his IBO at 140lbs, it was the only division along with 126lbs that he didn't pick up one of the 4 actual belts, but it should be noted he won the lineal title at both 126lbs & 140lbs so that does make him an 8 division champ imo, even if a few of them are weak-ish claims. Winning the IBO alone does not make you a world champion or even a 'belt holder' of the division any more than me smacking a ball against a wall in the sw19 area makes me a Wimbledon champion.
Pinklon Thomas is on that list. He was a decent heavyweight in his day, perhaps the #1 heavyweight in the world briefly. When he was unbeaten WBC champion in 1984-86. Problem is, his IBO title reign occurred when he won a 12 rounder split decision against Craig Payne in 1992, a fight that took place at the Greenville Memorial Centre in Greenville, South Carolina, when Thomas was one of the most "shot" former champions who'd ever have the misfortune to lay eyes on and was probably unable to get licensed in many states.
Yeah, there was another sanctioning organization (I can't remember which one) that went to the extreme of matching a 48-year-old Joe Bugner and a 45-year-old Bonecrusher Smith for a "world heavyweight title" ! If I remember rightly Smith wobbled around the ring for a minute or two before twisting his ankle and Bugner has been boasting he's the oldest man to win the world championship ever since !
ha bugner actually looked in better shape than the so called contenders of today like Pov. how badly boxing has sunk.
The IBO champion page is good for a laugh. The still have RQ listed as champ and other champs are so obscure they couldn't even find photos of them. Malcolm Klassen photo looks liked they shopped his head onto a random body. http://www.iboboxing.com/champions.html
I love the hypocrisy it shows how pathetic you fan boys are. Just like guys who say Jacobs isn't a champ but will happily add GGGs Regular title defenses. IBO world champion at this stage is probably a more meaningful title than being a regular champ.
