    Williams vs. Margarito

    Williams threw 1,256 punches.....Marg threw 652.

    Williams had 606 jabs..........Marg threw 61.

    Williams 655 power punches........Marg threw 591.

Marg threw 1,675 punches (WW record) against Clottey and only 652 against Williams.

just shows how a good repetitive jab in the face will slice someone's output in half

think this shows that Clottey is a good fighter... fought most the fight only being able to throw one hand and up against a big strong opponent who threw 1600 punches at him and didn't come close to being knocked out and was still competitive in losing a UD

True. Someone that tall with a jab and overall punch output that active is hell for any fighter, including Floyd. An output like that on a fighter with those dimensions is very hard to figure out.

I don't see it being hell for a sharpshooter like Floyd. Williams throws 4 punches, lands one, and is countered so accurately his head bobbles back and the judges give the point to the clean effective punching. Higher-output means more counter opportunities and less mustard on the blow. I think sluggers will fall victim to Williams range and jab, but counterpunchers of Floyd's pedigree will have a field-day.

You miss the fact that Williams has a 5 inch height advantage and 10 inch reach advantage on Floyd. It's hard to counter that, especially off a jab. And the bit about opening up countering opportunities isn't really true either. When someone throws that amount of punches, it affects a counter-puncher because they are unable to accurately time a single shot as well, and even if they do, they are still getting outworked. I would give the edge to Floyd over Margarito, but not Williams, due to Williams jab and length.

Williams hasnt proven himself yet. Once he fights an elite fighter then i would tell you who he can beat. I think a rematch between Williams and Margo would be different with Margo coming out on top. Floyd is a very smart fighter. I think he would figure Williams out and beat him

I'm a 6'1" welterweight too. It's a lot easier to get inside a tall guy than people think, especially with quick feet. Floyd will smother his punches staying close and holding like the did with Hatton. The thing you have to realize coming from the perspective of a tall-thin-quick fighter like myself is that unless i keep you at the end of my reach (or throw a short chopping righthand...or shorten my punches), my reach is useless. When a fighter gets inside (a la Chagaev vs. Valuev) there's a lot more openings and body exposed. Physical advantages are nullified by gameplan (and proper sparring partners) boxing ability, ring intelligence, and ring generaliship...Floyds got all 4 over PW. Floyd spars guys taller than Williams as is, and would in training and building a world-class gameplan. The guy has won ONE world title fight...whats with everyone on his bandwagon? I see nothing special to be quite honest.

I wasn't on the bandwagon prior to seeing the Williams/Margarito fight, because I saw the same things you did, that in order for your height and reach to matter, you have to use it. Williams used to like to bang inside and fight, but he has been improving at a very good rate, and his jab looked very good and active against Margarito, which was the key I thought was missing, an outside game. He is still young, and has plenty of time to improve. I am no fan, but I believe of the fighters today, he has the best style to beat Floyd.
