The winner of Williams/Martinez should be the pound for Pound #1.

The most talanted boxers in the world are Floyd Mayweather Jr. and Manny Pacquiao, and they hold the top two spots on any reasonable Pound for pound list. Their poistions on the top should be in jeopardy.
I am a firm believer in the philosophy of "what have you done for me lately?" When it comes to ranking boxers.

I currently have Mayweather in the number 1 spot. His boxing skills are head and shoulders above anyone in the sport. He also has the best resume as well. The problem is that he is something of a part time boxer. He has fought no more than twice a year since 2006. Now consider that he is in his words on vacation. The longer he remains inactive the less his hold on his ratting should be.

Than there is Pacquiao the second best boxer in the sport today. With Mayweather being as inactive as he is pacquiao would seem to be either able to overtake Mayweather or if he is in your number 1 spot more intrench himself in that spot. However he keeps fighting guys who are beneath his level. Clottey and Margratio come to mind.
Neather boxer is doing enough to deserve to hold on to their rankings in the long run.

On November 20th Paul Williams and Sergio Martinez will face each other in a rematch of their December 2009 bout. The Ring as of October 3rd ranks Williams 5 and Martinez 6. They both have the talent and resumes to deserve these rankings. Neather boxer is inactive or fighting bums. They have been and are taking risks. Whoever the winner is of this match should be the #1 pound for pound boxer in the world.

How long will that ranking hold? I don't know. If Mayweather decides to start fighting again or Pacquiao stops fighting bums both can regain the top spots. There is also the possibility that the winners of Khan/Maidana & Bradley/Alexander will face each other in mid 2011. Whoever winds out coming out on top is also going to have a strong case for the sport's top spot.

My point is this Boxers should not only have to earn their ranking as the best in the sport. They need to put forth the effort to keep that ranking. We should be more fickle about the sports most important ranking. We need to ask the question "What have you done for me lately?".

i agree for the most part a fighter is as good as their last fight, it's not a sure formula, but I do go by that as well. Martinez vs. Williams isn't getting the attention Pacman and Floyd are getting, but hopefully that will change in the future for either of these 2. I disagree with you sayin Pac hasn't fought the level of fighters Floyd has, clearly, Clottey is not on Mosley's level, it would be a competitive fight if those 2 did fight, but c'mon, the most boring fighter in the world Mora gave Mosley hell and in your own words, "A fighter is as good as his last fight", then my friend you know Mosley who struggled with an avg Mora was the same Mosley that almost ko'd Floyd. Mosley gassed out on Mora, further indicating he did gas out with Floyd for *****s that think he didn't.

Cotto, on the other hand, even though he struggled with Clottey, is on a higher level than Mosley and like Floyd, also beat Mosley. And to give Cotto more credit, Mosley was not gassing out on Cotto in their fight. That IMO was Mosley closer to his better days, but still past his prime. Just because Mosley steamrolled Margarito doesn't mean Floyd would do the same. You should know better having the most skill is a powerful weapon, but sometimes it's not enough to win them all. Floyd should school Manny, yet why didn't he school Castillo in their first fight? Sorry, but even though to be fair I do have Floyd as the #1 p4p for beating Mosley, because Mosley was the p4p#1 WW, Manny is easily as good as Floyd. At least I agree with you Manny is the #2, but no way has he fought lower quality than Floyd has. Not with that win over Cotto he hasn't. I don't care how crude, slow, off balance, and amateurish Margarito might seem, he always brings a constant danger and pressure to anyone he faces, even when he's losing. It's not as big as a win over Mosley, but it's not a walk in the park for any elite fighter whether it would be Manny or Floyd fighting Margarito.

What do wins from years ago have to do with current p4p rankings? Mayweather shouldn't even be on the list as he's on vacation.

I actually agree. The winner of this fight should be #1. Considering that Pacman is fighting Margarito who isn't even on the P4P list and Mayweather isn't fighting anybody at all.

should be a number 3, but there are other factors. like rafa vs juanma the winner of that will shoot up the list. montiel vs donaire likewise.

Martinez n PW are on the same level as margarito.

    You have PAC/mayweather

    Then:

    Cotto, Mosley, pw, Martinez,

    Then:

    Clottey, cintron etc.
