I don't give a **** how many hookers any fighter went to bed with ,what I find objectionable is a little ***** who knows zero about the subject calling Jack Dempsey or anyone else a professional ******,without a shred of substantiated proof to confirm their allegations.
"No man is a hero to his valet". " Peu d'hommes ont este' admire's par leurs domestiques" Mme DE Cornuel. A variation of which is Thomas Carlyle's. " A man must indeed be a hero to appear such in the eyes of his valet".
I happen to think Joe Louis truly was a great man. It's not often one can say that about a fighter but in his case I believe it's true. He was such an innocent, honest, giving person. Not without his flaws as a man mind you, but his inherent character was first-class.
I read an article on Joe Louis, from the 1940s.The reporter made out Louis to be-you can't put it any other way- mentally subnormal.
A lot of journalists from that period made him out to be less inteligent than he was and even dumbed down his speech to reflect the way black people speak in early Tom and Jerry cartoons. The fact that he had a sttammer didnt help. Louis did have dificulties reading and writing as a child and was never a towering intelectual. I do think however that he was smarter than he is often given credit for. In terms of his role in the civil rights movment he knew exactly what he was doing and why.
Mickey Duff tells a nice story about Louis ,they were in Manchester UK ,Louis wanted an item in a clothing store, they found a store and went in Joe had only a $100 bill to pay with ,the young shop assistant went to a nearby Bank to get change. On his return Louis gave him a £2 tip,the young lad was amazed,Louis asked him what he would spend the money on ,the lad replied " I will pay something of my suit". Duff explained the lad had it on hire purchase."How much will it cost you asked Louis?" "Twelve pounds" said the lad ,Louis promptly gave him the extra £10.Outside Duff said to Louis "that was very nice of you",Louis looked at Duff and said "that's one kid who won't hate n*****s".Joe might not have been very educated but he was far from slow witted.
So, this wife beating stuff has no foundations? I'd like to know. As for the fact he gambled, took drugs and shagged whores. Big ****ing deal. That just suggests he enjoyed his life to the full
Yeah, that lifestyle took him to great places. Oh wait... atsch So many boxers fall into it and end up strung out, taken advantage of and ****ing broke. They can do what they like, those aren't anyone's decisions but their own. But how they end up, how they die compared to how great they lived? That's depressing to the fans.
But i'm talking in respect to making him a bad person. You commented on wife beating, then someone chipped in with "he gambled and took drugs" or something. So ****ing what? Anyway, who are you Mother Teresa?
I don't personally care. The fact they one of the greatest heavyweights of all time became strung out, and lived that kind of life style right up until he died. That's what gets to me. It's a microcosm of everything that's wrong with boxing and how many of them end up after their done with the sport. Got it?
