Yeah, of course it's sad that he wasn't looked after or couldn't get out of the lifestyle he chose (with the help of his friends at the IRS), but that alone hardly makes him a bad person, which is the basis of my orginal comment.

I don't think he's a bad person. That's not what I'm trying to pain him as.

I think it should be put out there, what a person does whether it was good or bad. I don't come here to get strictly the good or the bad.

I've argued for Sonny Liston being more then decent multiple times. But fighters like Joe Louis, Marciano and Ali are seen in some peoples eyes as saintly, and I think the underbelly of all three is as interesting as their good sides, hence I bring them up.

Hell, I'm not exactly the one who broke the Rocky Marciano vibrator king story, or even Dempsey breaking in whores at a brothel. Those have been mentioned on here for a while now.

Fair enough mate. But I was genuinely interested in the Louis wife-beating story. If he kicked the **** out of her then he's a shithouse. End of story. But I've never heard he did. I have a very high regard for fighters compared with other sportsmen and celebrities in general, but heroes are those men who the country remembered yesterday.

At the end of the day I dont trawl through a fighters dirty laundry to find his single worst act to measure him by though I do make a general asesment of his character.

I would say that with a historical figure, especialy one recently deceased there is a burden upon us to produce some evidence to back up such alegations, or clarify that they are alegations.

Urban myths spring up like mushrooms around any historical figure and most of them are untrue. As a historian you have to be critical of any story, even ones that are quite well documented.

I took your advice and looked in the thread you created "Bad Men And Their Sorrid Stories"
    Here is your opening post.
"I forget who said it but, supposedly Jack Dempsey was PAID to break in virgins at brothels .Basically he drilled future whores until they were prepped to be done by other men"
The second post, which was also yours.
" A better known one ,as I only heard that Dempsey story once". You then go on to talk about Robinson.
Fact it was YOU who started the smear on Dempsey's name in that thread.and it was YOU who admitted you had only heard it once.
You are not only a poison tongued little ***** you are a LIAR AS WELL.
Compare these facts with the excuses you gave in the quotes .

Can we put to bed the Louis wife-beater allegations then? Several of us are very well-read on Louis, and there hasn't been anything (other than one moment in time) to pin those stories on.

If something to the contrary surfaces then fine, but otherwise I think it's something we can now lay to rest.

I have never beaten my wife, but the reality is many sane people have, in a relationship you have to stand up for yourself if you disagree strongly enough on something the other person wants to do, this is how a relationship works, its when you add alcohol and other things to the mix you can have a disaster.

You have to ask did Tyson hit Robbin Givvins because even if he didn't the pressure he was under from Don King and others, remember Givvins and her mother although controlling could see through King, who could blame him.

That's what I asked for ,and that's what was not forth coming. Some people get behind a screen and feel free to say things they would not ,face to face, Repeating some scrap of evil tittle tattle is not only morally repugnant and libellous, when done in this remote fashion it is also cowardly. Russell has repeatedly alleged that Dempsey was a proffessional ****** He made these remarks without the basis of a shred of proof ,admitting that he only heard them once. How would it be if I said I'd heard his Grandfather liked little boys? Easy to say, in justification ,I heard it some where. No retraction from Russell tells us volumes about his character, and principles.I say he is a Scum bag ,and that he has provided the proof of that himself.End of rant and hopefully this sorry saga.Sorry to all posters ,[save one ] , that I kept hammering this nail but it might stop any more unfounded mud slinging at men not able to defend themselves.

Just read that, thanks ,but again no proof. Kahn wrote the Dempsey book A Flame Of Pure Fire, his comments here do not inspire confidence in it.
