This really annoys the crap out of me. Wlad lost the title and holds nothing, how can he fight to unify something he doesn't have?

Neither him or AJ currently have done anything to deserve being a unified title holder. I got the initial facts wrong, but this is still a farce imho.

Surely Klitschko/Ortiz should have to fight for the top available WBA title - then whoever wins THAT should fight AJ for WBA Superchamp/IBF title, and the regular title drops to winner of Briggs/Browne/Oquendo... if you're going to have this multi-belt fiasco.

Because Joshua is the IBF champ. The WBA has absolutely no say in who he fights.

Joshua had an optional defense. He was going to fight Wlad. Wlad would only fight him if both titles (the WBA and IBF) were on the line. They couldn't make the fight. Joshua chose Molina.

After Molina, Joshua will have to fight his IBF mandatory. Now you're looking at late next summer of fall 2017 ... before Joshua has another optional defense.

Who knows what the heavyweight division will look like next summer/fall.

Luis Ortiz and Joshua may be the one Hearn wants. Wilder and the WBC title could be available. The Parker-Haye winner for the WBO belt could be there. Tyson Fury could be back.

Wlad will probably want a fight before Joshua, since he'll be off nearly TWO YEARS by the time Joshua has another optional defense.

They only included that line because the Wlad and Joshua camps requested it. But the time has passed.

There isn't going to be a Wlad-Joshua fight. The window closed.

And the WBA finally sanctions a fight for Klitschko-Joshua, but for the "Super" title for the spring. Also the Browne-Briggs winner must face Oquendo next. Hmmm

Joshua can't fight for any "super" title in the spring. Joshua's IBF mando will be due. And Tyson Fury could want back in by then.

The WBA has nothing to do with Anthony Joshua. They can't tell him to fight Wlad in the spring. The WBA can't tell him to fight anyone.

If Wlad and Joshua could've come to an agreement for a December fight, it was on. They didn't so it's won't be on ... likely ever.

Its gonna look like two old men going at it, Lucas looks like George The Animal Steele and Briggs looks like Bill Cobbs.

Dan is just reading into things. The WBA ruling says nothing about a "spring" fight. Read the PDF of the statement on the WBA site.

And, if you do a quick search for "IBF Outlines Anthony Joshua Mandatory Defense Timeline" you'll find that the IBF will be announcing Joshua's mandatory challenger in the next couple of weeks.

    Dan left that out.

    In your opinion.

But as you said yourself, who knows what the heavyweight division will look like next summer/fall.

I'm not totally discounting a Joshua vs Wlad fight at some time in the future, even if you are.

Boxing scene is also reporting that the WBA has agreed to sanction the Klitschko-Joshua fight for the spring. So I'm just going to go off of that!!

But the IBF hasn't sanctioned it. And since Joshua is the IBF champ, it doesn't matter what the WBA sanctions. It matters what the IBF sanctions. Joshua is the IBF champ. He's not the WBA champ.

The WBA can't tell him who to defend against in the spring. The IBF can.

And Wlad won't fight him unless the IBF belt is on the line, too.

Youre right, but I think the fight will happen in the spring.

I think you're most likely correct about how this plays out, but the IBF does allow unfications to trump mandatories. Now whether this would count as an actual unification because the WBA Super belt would be vacant rather than held by Wlad is a separate question.

So why exactly would there be a court order? Is that because boxing is regulated by each state? I've never heard of anything like that happening.
