I remember when Sonny Liston supposedly gave up his title to Cassius Clay, that young kid who was dropped by 180lb Henry Cooper (who Floyd Patterson KO'd in 4) something seemed so fishy for everyone and the rematch proved only that Liston had a glass jaw or though he was wrestler and decided to roll around the ring until the confused ref JJW remembered how to count.

I remember the days of Teddy Brenner at MSG, for me he was a fair promoter and one of the best match makers ever.

I heard about the mob controlling boxing in the days of Lamotta and those story's

I remember Don King controlling the ABC orgs and buying ratings for Larry Holmes opponents from Ring Magazine and they way King controlled the split title ERA....He was corrupt

Today though I have seen some of the worst decisions that I remember and the most blatant and corrupt officials world wide...We have Delahoya who purchased Ring magazine (how fair can they be)

what are your thoughts on boxing corruption and bad decisions, what era's you remember and your opinion on the worst era or promoter

I don't think a lot of people that post here even remember the King era that well

    The WBA (World Boxing Association)

The World of Corruption back in 1976 thru 1980.

Back room deals, kick-backs, approved Title fights against inept fighters, pay for
    World rankings, step-aside money.

That was just the tip of the 'iceberg'.

If we go back to the IBC, Boxing was like a chess board. Every move had a purpose; where as now everyone is working for seperate goals and undercutting each other as they go about it.

British stoppages & decisions can still leave one to think that the UK will just never stop it's agenda of OWNED fighters.

Germany is just as bad, perhaps worse at times, but it's everywhere, the sport is a farce and thats why it's dead.

the sad thing is knowing this, THEY (Promoters, Boards, paid Officials, PPV corps, Press and such), still refuse to give it life and integrity.

Disgusting, my heart breaks for the kids, especially the ones that have the top level talent!!!

I would agree. I know the younger people on this forum probably will laugh at this statement, but I reckon the sport today is as clean as it has been since the Marquess Queensberry and Chambers had their first correspondence.

Which is not really good thing, as it shows how truly corrupt and/or political the sport has probably always been.

peaks and valleys really. i think the rash of HORRIBLE decisions in the past 2 years is the worst as a group i've in my years watching. but bad decisions, corrupt promoters and shady refs have always been a part of boxing and will always be a part of boxing

It has always been dodgy, since time began.

I remember the King era, do I think it is worse now? I don't think it is. I think there are more "players" now in the sport than back in the day but this is a by product of all the new sanctioning bodies that have popped up since the 90's.

When you look through the history book's it has always been open to corruption, because like horse racing, people have always bet money on it, as we know money corrupts.

If there is money to be made out of it then the money people will look to control/corrupt it, always been that way, probably always will be

I got to admit at 38, I thought I was keeping this forum's average just below 70!

But it is good that younger fans take an interest in the history of the sport. Just remember you are 19, hopefully single, so make the most of it, before a partner, vulture... I mean children and old age come along to haunt you.

 Trust me I know! My old man was married at 19, so I've grown up with plenty of lectures on how women are evil etc...

I know all this because I work in my local Boxing gym, and to teach things properly I need an understanding of Boxing otherwise I'm cheating those that I'm teaching.

The average age on the Classic is pretty high  It's difficult to make sure you're taken seriously sometimes. Age brings wisdom and wisdom can breed arrogance too.
