Thought of this today and my mind immediately went to Zora Folley for having a somewhat similar style to Moorer. I doubted his chances (even faced with the haggard and much harassed version in the title encounter in question), but then I remembered how close Bert Cooper came to beating a better Holyfield. So how about it? Does Bert still fumble the bag and wilt at some later point against this Holyfield?
To be honest Bert Cooper lost decisively every round besides 3rd, and Holy did well even after the KD in round 3. So no, Cooper won't do that. Also keep in mind that Moorer was clearly the better fighter than Cooper and (while suffering 2 hard KDs) beat him fair and square. Moorer was a world class boxer and had great skills, he also was a southpaw. All these factors should be taken into consideration. He just didn't have the chin to be competitive against elite HWs for a long period.
I agree with everything you said, but I also don't see Moorer as the breakpoint. Though I don't clearly recall now how close the rounds were themselves, Moorer won most of them on my card. I can see someone of lesser overall quality (but perhaps with a style more suited to exploit Evander's lacking stamina) to turn the trick.
I think Moorer won like 8 rounds to 4, and round #2 should be 10-8 for Holy. So 115-112 is my score. I can see someone not as skilled as Moorer to get the win that night but he should have had much better chin than Moorer
I see some titlists from the 80's beating Holyfield. Not saying they're worse than Moorer but beltholders who didn't hold the title for long. Guys like Tony Tucker, Tony Tubbs, Tim Witherspoon and even guys who fell short like Carl Williams could conceivably beat Holyfield if they came prepared. For some reason I feel Holyfield struggles with a handful of the lost heavyweights of the 1980's.
If Witherspoon is in top form a match between him and Evander would be great. Ferdie Pacheco once said Spoon could give Holy fits. Weaver vs Holy would be action packed but I’d pick Evander to win
I have a feeling Spoon gives Holyfield hell and takes a close one. I also like Weaver. I believe it was you who you opened my eyes to his 80's resume. He's got some excellent wins with his championship run and even a bit after. Holyfield-Weaver would be a war that Holyfield takes in the end.
80s titleholders were really talented and some of them could have given Holy of 94 a very hard fight. Prime Dokes also stands a chance if he was competitive against better version of Holyfield. Spoon most definitely. I think any version of Holy, either late 80s or mid-to late 90s, has his hands full vs Spoon.
I personally wouldn’t favor either of them to beat Evander but yes they’d be extremely tough fights and probably exciting
