Let's discuss. This is a trope that I see getting thrown out there a lot, but I disagree. We only have to go back a few years to the era when Vitali was able to come back off a 3 year retirement and in his first fight back shut out sam peter and make him quit. So if this era is "the worst" how about the era where we had sam peter running around shouting "who necks", Ruiz, Valuev and Chagaev playing pass the parcel with the WBA belt and a couple of years prior Shannon briggs and Liakovic facing off for the WBO People seem to forget that while all of this was going on Wlad has been brutally ktfo 3 times, and after getting dropped about 6x by a rubbish sam peter (and he was rubbish) and people were telling Wlad he needed to retire because he wasn't cut out for the game. It was only after beating cripple toe haye that Wlad got taken seriously, he was considered a big stiff glass jawed bum (sound familiar) up until that point. So stop. Just stop with all this "weakest era ever" BS. Is not even the weakest era of the last 20 years. Outside of the klitschkos there's not one name on that list that would beat Wilder, Joshua or Fury. Deal wiv it
"If you take the two best fighters out of this era, you'll notice this era is actually worse without them" Fascinating.
39 year old faded Povetkin is a top 3 or top 5 HW depending how you rate him in this era, so I'm not sure you've made a particularly strong case for this era. The previous era wasn't very good and this era certainly isn't the worst ever, but it is pretty pants.
To say Wlad only started getting respect after beating David Haye is laughable. Didnt you also say the other day how Audley Harrsion was once the only thing on the boxing calendar? You are seriously a weird Matchroom/AJ fanboy. Turn off Sky sports news, unfollow Eddie Hearn and have a look around the world of boxing, its pretty fun.....at times
I would tend to agree with the OP, personally. In terms of how individual boxers compare like for like it's obviously hard to say. Certainly in terms of being a competitive division I don't think it's the weakest era in boxing. AJ is currently top dog but I think on their day guys like Wilder, Parker, Povetkin, Fury, Ortiz, Whyte could beat AJ and also each other. The heavyweight scene brings big KO's so as long as the fights are somewhat competitive and the fighters stir up some entertainment to make the division interesting I'm happy.
i'm not sure whether it is "the worst ever", but it is god awful. AJ is at the top of the tree and would you favour him against the prime version of any of the other No.1 from previous eras? i'm not so sure people would. Wilder is awful but has monstrous power, Parker has never really been that good at world level as evidenced by the Ruiz, Cojanu & Joshua fights, and AJ still laboured to a win against him. Whyte is bang average, Ortiz is good, T. Fury we have no idea what level he is at now, H. Fury is yet too properly prove himself for me, Povetkin hasn't looked good since he came off the drugs and got battered by Klit closer to his prime. Luckily, some of the prospects potentially have the goods, i.e Joyce, Hrgovic, Dychko, Dubois, Sirenko, Teslenko etc & with Usyk moving up and possibly other top cruisers, it could fast become a really talented division.
He did only start getting respect after that. The fanbase was split pretty evenly over who would win that fight Yes a blown up Cruiserweight cripple toe whos best win was 40 year old mormeck was seen as very live against ATG prime wlad Do your history mate
One of the main problems I’d that fans look back with rose tinted glasses, there were certainly weak eras in history like the Holmes era and then after Lewis was certainly very weak.. Also in the uk at least it seems there is some kind of valour in hating on successful UK boxers like AJ who I agree isn’t a god but would have been involved in a lot of competitive fights had he been in a different era.
Mate I was on this site back then so I know how it was just like I know how it was with Fury prior to him beating klitschko Stop trying to after time it
Yup yup and yup It's certainly rose tinted glasses and also the benefit of a whole career to judge. Klitschko was being told to retire at one point, Lewis was a glass jawed bum after the Mccall fight, Holyfield was a small old man, even Ali wasn't highly regarded until after his comeback. Combine with that yes Brits HATE a confident winner (If they are british, if they are american then we jerk off to them) and you have this huge effort to tear Joshua down. I imagine if Fury somehow beats wilder and joshua it'll only be a matter of time until these lot turn on him as well.
Wlad's run pre-Haye was decent. He would have had respect from that. MORE after the Haye fight? Absolutely. But I think to say he was universally without respect is erroneous
Mods, ban this heretical unbeliever immediately before his blasphemy invites divine retribution upon us all!
