There really should be a special wing in the boxing hall of fame, just for "the worst defs of all time." - complete with video footage. It would probably be very popular. It would have to be a VERY large wing, with special areas reserved for Germany, Spain, and Texas.
The referee in the TT vs Price rematch was really bad either. He counted too slow, to give Price the chance to recover. When I counted till 10, the referee was still at 7.
I may be mixing this name w/someone else, anyway surprised nobody has mentioned Richard Steele. I know he's long retired from reffing. IIRC he was a very active, involved ref, which I near despise. That type of ref is an attention ***** :emma trying to be too much a part of the fight.
i always thought steele was one of the best. how about an example of why you think he is bad, let alone the worst.
Not suggesting he's the worst like the threads title asks. Just too active for me. IIRC Rudy Battle is another old ref in Steele's era who was better. Then again Cortez is getting lots of grief here, but he's also successful to have reffed so many fights and his share of big ones. Maybe b/c Cortez has such a large body of work, sooner or later he'll **** off most fans :think
i think cortez got so many fights because he was the best ref money could buy. his obvious favoritism in fights was downright insulting to the viewer, it was like wwf. its ironic that his catch phrase was "im fair but im firm", because he was neither. i decided long ago that if i ever ran into him i would let him know what a pos i thought he was. for my money, mills lane was the best in the biz.
All potential Yank refs should be forced to take a 3 year course in studying Mills Lane in action, with an exceptionally hard test at the end of it. Then the country might manage to claim 2 competent, and honest refs.
