yep. we still don't know anything about his chin and heart which makes pro boxing very different from amateur. i still have to see him fight a C+ to B-level boxer yet. so' i'll reserve judgement on him until then.

boxing history is replete w/ great, very talented amateur boxers not being able to make that successful transition to a great pro career. i'm definitely not saying gamboa won't. but right now, it is still too early not to consider this a possibility.

very impressive. this time, let's see him sit on his punches and throw power in every punch and still have the same speed.

According to Yahoo!, Rocky Juarez might be the next name for Gamboa - assuming he wins this Saturday!

Iole spoke to HBO's Luis Barragan and Kery Davis, and they said that both Rocky Juarez and Jorge Barrios was mentioned as potential Gamboa opponents. Of course the two was to meet in the same ring on the Mosley-Judah undercard but it's off now.

Iole says that Juarez is likely to face Juarez later this year - and the would be HUGE! The last step before a world title fight. Also IMO fighting Barrios would be an unnecessarily risk unless it's for the vacant WBC title.

    Bring on Juarez!

I'm not too worried about Gamboa's chin...mainly because I've seen him get hit more times than he should for dropping his hands to bait people in.

    Juarez/Gamboa would be outstanding.

Okay. Tom, can you clear the weigh-in situation? Originally this fight was planned for the vacant WBC SFW Int' title (it is named in the lastest press release), but Jimenez was 131 and the boxrec doesn't show the title in the schedule anymoe.

Is it still on for the title? Maybe only for Gamboa?

    The press release:

First ARENA-show on HBO Ahmet Öner: "The future starts now!" HBO-expert Lennox Lewis: "Gamboa and Solis are exceptional talents!"

When super featherweight sensation Yuriorkis Gamboa (9-0, 8 kos) steps into the right to fight Darling Jimenez (23-2-2, 14 kos) for the vacant WBC international championship in Primm, Nevada this Saturday it is not only the HBO debut for the spectacular 2004 Olympic gold medallist from Cuba but also the first HBO show for Gamboa's promoter Ahmet Öner and his ARENA Box-Promotion.
The "Night of the Rising Stars" at Terrible's Primm Valley Casino Resorts is a joint-venture co-promotion of ARENA and Gary Shaw Productions, LLC. It will be broadcasted on HBO's "Boxing After Dark" at 9:45 p.m. (live ET/tape-delayed PT) and features a giant tripleheader including Gamboa vs. Jimenez and the world class junior middleweight bouts James Kirkland (21-0, 18 kos) vs. Eromosele Albert (21-1, 10 kos) and Alfredo Angulo (12-0, 9 kos) vs. Richard Gutierrez (24-1, 14 kos).

"This is what every promoter in the world is working for", states Öner. "Everybody wants to be on HBO - I made it in only one and a half years. If Gamboa beats Jimenez - which I am pretty confident he will - this might be the beginning of a long and successful relationship. The future starts now!"

At HBO's fighter's meeting Öner grabbed the chance to talk to ring legend and TV-expert Lennox Lewis who will be ringside tomorrow night along with Bob Papa and Max Kellerman.
"You got some very exciting prospects", said Lewis. "I can't wait to see Gamboa and I also want to take a look at your heavyweight Solis. I hear he's the next big think. Those exceptional talents are the future of the sport."

Originally Solis was planned to give his US debut on the undercard of Saturday's show in Primm. "Unfortunately he didn't get his visa", explains Öner. "But we are preparing our next US show for June 27th. Hopefully we can present all three 2004 Olympic gold medallists - Gamboa, Solis and Yan Barthelemy - on the same card then."

With 128.5 lbs. super featherweight phenomenon Yuriorkis Gamboa showed himself in excellent condition for his shot at the vacant WBC international championship at today's weigh-in at Terrible's Primm Valley Casino Resort. His opponent Darling Jimenez weighed in at 131 lbs.

"I wouldn't care if Jimenez weighed 150 pounds", stated Gamboa. "I'll beat him anyways."
Alfredo Angulo (154 lbs.) will go into his fight for the vacant WBO intercontinental junior middleweight title slightly heavier than his opponent Richard Gutierrez (152 lbs.).
The third part of the giant HBO Boxing After Dark tripleheader is for a vacant title as well. James Kirkland (154 lbs.) will face Eromosele Albert (152.5 lbs.) for the NABO junior middleweight championship.

Promoted by Gary Shaw Productions, LLC and ARENA Box-Promotion the broadcast of the three main events starts on May 17th at 9:45p.m. (live ET/tape-delayed PT).

Don't know but I would think that it would just be for Gamboa to win...

Just look at Gamboa's eyes! There's so many comparisons by the fans between him and Tyson... well... the way he looks is something similar!

    T V I N F O

    US/North American fans:

The HBO BAD broadcast starts at 9:45PM ET/PT

    European fans:
DSF broadcast (probably only the Gamboa fight, maybe Gutierrez as well since he's an Arena fighter too) starts at 5:20AM CET (which is 4:20GMT).

hmm, 128.8. i guess he's a small SFW after all. maybe he should be fighting at FW instead. he doesn't look weight-drained at all at that weight. he'll probably come in at around 136-137 for the fight which is quite light by SFW standards.
