Gam is VERY beatable at any weight with his defensive & offensive flaws. The kid is ultra talented....dont get me wrong. But he has that "AM" mind set and bad habits that work well for AM fighters....but in the pro ranks that spells a **** strom of problems when he steps up. The good thing about GAM is that he is fast, Powerful and confident! But the sword cuts both ways. he relies on his power and speed a lot and fights instinctual which include his patchy "D". He leaves himself open far too much to think he is unbeatable. I can see him doing great things if he gets a trainer that can shed the habits that have lead him to meeting the canvas at least 4 times in his young career.
Fight in a more composed and calculated manner. Tighten up his "D" and utilize his natrual abilities at the right moments. No one is saying "Don't showcase your speed, power or Reflexes"....just showcase them at the right time....Use intelligence instead of over aggression. He has technique and skills but his confidence leads him to fight reckless and that's his major problem. He needs guidence at the trainer level...someone who can help him realise that with all that talent and natural gifts he can get far more out of it if he can harnest those attributes and control them in a way to become the kind of fighter that lasts....and not only lasts...but becomes what legends are made of. B/c lets face it....the kid has all the potential in the world, but how many times have we seen kids like this get moved along too fast and never reach that potential "everyone" thought was a given?
Agreed! But he's still young enough to correct that mental flaw! He just needs the right people with the right chemistry to get Gam to listen and actually implement change. He's absolutley one of the most talented kids in boxing right now...but he's also one of the most dangerous....to and for his opposition. It's russian roulette with this kind of fighter.
Well said, Charlie. I think a change of trainer is needed here, hell, they should've hired Roach or one of the Mayweathers or an experienced trainer outside of Miami long ago. He just loves fighting, but extremely overconfident and lacks respect for the trainer. Confidence is good, but the necessary improvements after his stunning first 8 fights are still not there. The main problem many Cuban talents face is motivation and dedication. He's very much in Miami's passionate party life, when other young talents, like Juan Manuel Lopez or Roman Gonzalez are in the gym all the time, caring about their boxing career first, having a good time later. This is a big factor. Even Floyd Mayweather Jr., with all the BS talk and appearances outside of boxing, is a gym rat. That's an overlooked but very important 'skill'. Juan Carlos Gomez, Odlanier Solis and others are the examples of the problems I'm speaking of.
:good Thanks bro. We see that Gam is incredible but there is definitley some things in his craft that need some work. The mayweathers or Roach would be outstanding! I just hope waht you say about him being in the "Miami Party Life" isn't true. Floyd is a rare breed who like Gam has unreal talent and ability. But you're absolutley correct....Floyd, when it comes to his profession is what you would call a perfectionist or dedicated to his craft! He don't play with his preparations which is why we've saw one of the best boxers in this era....and one of the most consistant! Man.....I really had high hopes for Juan Carlos Gomez at CW! He was something special as well. Its a shame that the cuban boxing program produces such amazing talents but when they defect....they begin to live the life they never had the opportunity to have in their native country.....I do understand why they seem to fall by the wayside when they hit the US or other free countries.
Being a Cuban amateur boxer is extremely tough, especially if you're in the national team. In camp almost during all year, very little free time, no party life or money to spend, etc. The Castro Regime's HUGE achievement was to put amateur boxing together to a Olympic gold winning machine. It's a tough world, but ultimately successful. Now when they defect and get their VISA, a flat, free training, a fat signing bonus and good money for every fight, it's so much better than their previous conditions, that it's easy to just disappear in the very heated Miami Cuban party life. From the amateur training to the expensive cars, gold chains, big screen TV, money to buy anything etc., is like a dream come true, easy to feel mission accomplished, hard to put it all away for the same painful training sessions - because pro training is not easier. Training outside of Miami under a trainer Gamboa respects, that should happen.
Yet another first round knockout by Yuriorkis Gamboa. What a sweet combination. Yuri might have the best left hook to the body right hook to the chin combo, it was excatly the same kind of one-two that finished Al Seeger, only Walter Estrada was out in 35 seconds. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Lfd47K3jeck
14 fights under his belt after a VERY, VERY extensive amateur career. The guy's 27...so not young anymore. Is it not time he steps up in class and fights the kind of C+/B- contenders that will help him prepare for a title shot in 3-4 fights' time? I think so. His promoter is happy milking him for all he's worth against low quality opposition, though. When will he step up? When he's 30? Good luck to him, then.:good Instead of making him fight at least someone as good as Jimenez time after time, these days, they got scared and made him fight even lower quality opposition. I am not a fan.
I know his last couple opponents have been less than quality but Gamboa brings a ton of excitement to his fights. I look forward to him winning a world title.
Mate, most solid B level guys bring loads of excitement to their fights against really crap opposition. They can dive in with impunity and bomb them out quickly, if they so wish. The real excitement FOR ME is seeing competitively matched guys giving their all, not mistmatches in which a guy blows bums out of the water time after time after time. Yeah, Gamboa has amazing skills - WE ALL GET IT NOW - is it not time for him to start PROVING himself against better opposition?
Hmmm...not sure what either has done to deserve a title shot...but that's life. Rojas...hmmm...not impressed.
