Stylistically I believe that Gamboa would have a nightmare against someone like Juan Diaz. He has very quick hand speed, but his feet are no nearly as fast IMO. He prefers to use his great upperbody movement instead. Against an elite level pressure fighter this will be his biggest weakness.

Otherwise, a very talented fighter. Will perform very well against anyone who tries to box against him. Much like Roy, he present angles that many fighters have never seen before, and that are very hard to defend against.

Well... I see the size difference as a bigger disadvantage... As Gamboa was a flyweight at the Olympics, even with a few more pounds added to his body as he was growing up, his natural pro weight should be SBW or FW. Of course he was a FW in his last amateur fights, but almost all elite fighters at the pro FW class are taller and physically bigger than him, so he HAS to be aggressive and move in to land punches and there’s a significant difference in reach, especially at SFW, where he's won his first title on Friday.

I thought at the beginning of his pro career, that after 1 or 2 fights he'll move down to SBW (he started as a FW, pretty much the same weight he left the amateurs) but he moved up to SFW quickly and it's like having a very talented guy like Israel Vazquez competing at a higher weight class, like 130. I don't know if he's having weight problems at 126, but I believe that at least for his first world title fight he should move down to the 126 limit.

Did you see Gamboa as an amateur? His footwork and movement was absolutely incredible, he had the same upper body/head movement he has now aswell.

As a pro he is setting his feet alot more, trying to bait opponents so he can counter. Maybe if he fights a pressure fighter he will adapt and utilise his footwork some more, don't know. I also suspect he might be planting his feet more because he is lazy, he is fighting lesser opposition now than he was fighting as an amateur and it all seems too easy at the moment so i hope it doesn't hurt him later on when he fights the top pros.

Then again he might just be trying for more power. I'd like to see him move more and work on his defence more because offensively he is the complete package, i get the feeling that he is the sort of guy who is gonna keep doing what he's doing until it fails him.

Laziness?

I think he should be fighting lighter in weight and with his feet.

I just saw that the fight vs Edwards was actually scheduled for 10 rounds!! I first thought it were 8 rounds.

If he can make 126 limit well enough then yes i would agree, i think he could beat chris john now if they fought and i'd give him a decent chance against pac, JMM and guzman would be more difficult fights though, give him a year though and think he would beat all of them

I was going over Gamboa's amateur record and its quite interesting. His buddy Yan Barthelemi who defected with him and Solis beat him 3 out of 4 times, though the last time they met was in 2002.

Yep, he lost 3 out of 4 vs. Yan. Of course he was just a 18-19 old kid and a growing 48kgs and Barthelemy had far more experience (2 more years) but the fact is a fact. I'd pay to see any of those fights.

It just can't get any better: Arena's Ahmet Öner made a great deal with Gary Shaw and both Solis and Gamboa will debut on the HBO BAD (It's not clear that Solis will be on screen as well) and as far as I know not one fighter born outside of the US could do this barely a year after his first pro fight... EVER!

Shaw, HBO, everyone see the talent... and you know, if you have an HBO date as soon as your 11th fight and you are in the top10 at all organization's rankings, the world title is just a step away...

Of course JMM and Joan Guzman at 130, Linares and luevano at 126 are HBO fighters but if Gamboa will be one himself, it won't take long for HBO to put down some money for the non-HBO champs - Fana, Valero... of course Guerrero fights on SHO and John fights in Indonesia, but it looks like getting a world title opportunity won't be a problem for Öner... He's done a great job so far and he's getting better and better!

Of course Gamboa's 10th fight's coming up in a few weeks, before the HBO debut, againt the very durable Jose Rojas...
