So by the same logic do you rate Larry Holmes ahead of Ali, or William Joppy ahead of Roberto Duran?

Yeah, and Abraham deserves respect for moving up in weight, coming to America and risking his undefeated record against a legitimate Top 10 fighter in his prime at both 160 and 168. Calzaghe NEVER DID THAT, not even for a non-title defense, until an old old B-Hop was ripe for the taking. God forbid he risk his precious zero even though he wouldn't have to put up the WBO, which was a Super Milk Carton Title when he won it over Eubank.

Abraham is the true #1 contender at middleweight. Calzaghe gets no respect for taking the low-risk, big money reward like he's done way too many times in his career.

You are basing his "greatness" based on threads at ESB?:-(

Yes...because he'd have to be great to beat Jones at this point in Jones' career.

I think if JC fights Pavlik after beating Jones, he should automatically get ATG status from the cynical ****s here at ESB.

Not gonna happen obviously. Pavlik will become a bum overnight, but I don't care that much. Joe has been a pleasure to watch in the few years I've been following boxing.

    :D

I'd give Slappy Joe credit for even getting in the ring with Pavlik, let alone beating him.

But you're right. Never gonna happen. Joe's wayyyyyyyyyyy too smart for that. Why risk so much just to get iced when you can retire comfortably as the "legend killer"? :rofl

What will never happen is Joe getting the recognition he deserves. I think there is a good chance that Joe will fight after Roy so long as he still has some pep left.

Pavlik has nothing that Lacy or Kessler didn't have before they met their maker. Fact. Taylor is his biggest win whose career highlight is beating up the same old man Joe beat up with youth/prime on his side.

Again, this kind of statement just exposes a glaring lack of sound boxing knowledge. People on this forum consistently fail at two things: being objective, and taking each case on its own merits.

I give Calzaghe very little credit for the Hopkins win- but that is because I think he performed very poorly. Hopkins was shown up in that fight to no longer have the stamina to fight 12 rounds. Calzaghe was far less effective than Hopkins in the fight, but won purely on workrate as Hopkins didn't have the stamina or energy to match him, but he was by far the more incisive and skilled of the two.

However, Calzaghe must be given a degree of credit because Hopkins had still been competing effectively at world-class level in his fights before that fight, so even though he is well well past prime, he had not declined to the point where he wasn't competing at the highest level anymore. Although I think Calzaghe was woefully ineffective on the night v a superior opponent, he still got the win from the judges, and I give him a degree of credit for that because despite Hopkins's very apparent lack of stamina, I still that the Hopkins of that night would have defeated Tarver or Johnson or Dawson or Kessler, or anyone else at light-heavyweight or supermiddleweight. He no longer has the stamina to be considered elite opposition- but he was by no means completely shot.

I can't even be bothered explaining why to any airhead who disagrees, but it should be glaringly obvious to anyone who has followed RJJ's career that RJJ is completely shot. Unlike Hopkins, he has not been competing at world-class standard. The last times he faced world-class opposition was 3-4 years ago, and he was KO'd cold twice. No matter how Calzaghe wins this fight, as he will 1000% win, there is no credit and no honour gained by beating up a shot legend for money.

It will mean 0 if he wins. If he loses it proves what we always knew that even a shot to ribbons corpse named Jones with nothing left but speedy flurries. Can still put a dent in the biggest Euro-hype job going today.
