Yes, a great peformance from Hopkins. No-one has ever beaten Johnson like that.

 

Also Calzaghe was a Showtime fighter in the states and Jones was contracted to HBO. Very unlikely for that fight to be made.

No I don't particularly believe that. A combination of some lack of ambition on Calzaghe's part, some of those big fights just not being there and some just circumstances (it has often been noted that the big flat spot in Calzaghes career coincided with the period of his divorce).

 

How did you feel about the timing of his retirement?

 

Fine. Pointless carrying on when there are no challenges out there to motivate. That was clearly how Calzaghe felt and it's hard to really blame him given what was out there. Best potential opponent out there was Dawson but he's hardly proven at elite level at this point and doesn't bring any fans, money or a great deal of attention. Guy is 37, if he feels that that is it, then that is it.

 

Right...the same Hopkins who after flooring Joe took on Calzaghe's most avoided challenger at the time and completely schooled him whilst ol' feather duster hands took on an obviously shot and gun shy RJJ for the money as in Joe's own words 'boxing is dead'.

 

How about a Hopkins rematch in Wales? That would have been kind of cool. I know not a lot of people enjoyed the first fight but it would still be an event.

 

Nah when he smiles, hes smiling cos he knows he has gone down as an ATG, HOF, and P4P champion. And does it matter where you fight? its a ****ing ring at the end of the day! he fought in the uk, germany and the usa and remained undefeated. 46-0, 21 title defenses, unified a division (first man to do so at 168) decade long reign and was a two weight world champion. he beat Legends such as Eubank, Jones and Hopkins, Rival champions in Kessler lacy, Former champions in Beyer, Mitchel, Woodhall and reid and didnt lose once. And the fact that hes acclomplished all this without one loss has really gotta be eating you up inside.

Thing is you HATE a man who youve never met and who has done great things and instead of congratulating him, you make bitter jealous remarks about him. Thats the funny thing about boxing, all the people who are full of hate eventually end up beaten and humiliated whilst someone as nice and sporting as Calzaghe kicked ass until the end.

 

First fight was horrible from a spectacle point of view, and there's a lot to be said for the point of view that, if Hopkins couldn't beat Calzaghe in America, he ain't beating him in Wales.

Again, wouldn't have been against the idea of it, but if it's not motivational for Calzaghe then it's probably not worth doing. If he was going to do something specifically as a 'farewell fight' in Cardiff, I even think it would be better to fight someone he could look better against and would provide a more fan friendly spectacle.

 

The Americans hate Joe c but people who say he slaps are ****ing idiots ask Jeff Lacy owned him a proper boxing lesson. Hopkins did pull out of the fight when they were both in there prime and when they did fight Hopkins was good at holding and head butting then disgraced himself by saying he got hit in the nuts the bloke was starting to get boxed up and CHEATED.
