Ok, I know this is pretty far-fetched, but I was thinking about the reasons Mayweather may have retired for and I got to thinking about this long-shot possibility:

Floyd retires knowing Oscar won't find a credible opponent in time to fight in September. He (and Leonard "The Mastermind" Ellerbe) realize that the Cotto-Margarito winner makes the most sense in the world for Oscar's final fight.

Realizing that Oscar would be in for a very dangerous fight against either guy, they decide to sit back in the shadows, continue to market "Money" in other areas, building his fan base with the casual person, all the while waiting to see if Cotto/Margarito can beat the Golden Boy.

Should Cotto/Margarito win, they would be an instantly recognizable name to the general public after knocking off the Golden Boy. At the same time, Mayweather is becoming more and more recognizable to the casual person with everything else he has been involved with in the last 18 months.

Mayweather than announces his return for one last fight, potentially setting himself up for the biggest payday of his career, and billing it as a face off vs. the toughest, most dangerous opponent of his career...

I know its very, very far-fetched, but it does make one think. Ellerbe is a very clever manager.....

good point..not far fetched at all...in fact it makes perfect sense. but it makes perfect sense no matter the outcome of the cotto/margarito v. oscar fight. if its cotto/margarito that beats oscar then fine but it would probably mean even more $$ (which is what floyd wants) if oscar were to win

if its not delahoya he's fighting..its not going to be the biggest purse of his career...a fight with cotto/margarito will only give him figures close to the hatton fight.

Ellerbe can try to market Mayweather any other way he pleases, but if he's not fighting, he's not going to be a D list celebrity much longer. Hey, maybe Hollywood squares will come back and he can go on that. Or Surreal World.

i guess the question is...why would the winner of cotto/margarito want to fight oscar if floyd is out there. i know it makes $$ sense for floyd to wait for the winner of that fight to fight oscar and then see what's what...but say cotto wins. if i'm cotto i'm saying **** that i don't want to be a part of some golden boy PBF wet $$ dream, i want floyd right now. given how good both cotto and margarito are i don't think they would be out of line to draw a line in the sand and demand mr. p4p floyd and tell oscar to take a hike.

Cotto/Margarito will make the best payday of their career with a fight vs. De La Hoya, and then if Floyd is an option afterwards, you can bet the $ would be there.

A pair of fights vs. Oscar and then Floyd could net the winner a $25-30 million dollar combined payday(s) with PPV revenue and gate sales....

Not bad for 2 fights...and you know Floyd would ask for a $30 million guarantee plus 25% of the PPV sales...

That could translate into $40-45 million for Floyd. Add that to the nearly $50 million he made in the Oscar & Hatton fights, and Floyd is living the super high-life!

First off, I have heard this theory elsewhere... not saying your ripping it intentionaly, but I have seen this before-- What concerns me most about your post is that it takes such a pro-business stance that it rewards decisions that will just drag the sport down. Floyd should already be in the ring with Cotto if he wants to.

    If not, enjoy retirement Floyd.

It does make very good sense actually. Oscar could make even more money, both could get more respect, and "possibly" as you said, even set themselves up for a "marketable" rematch

It makes no sense since PBF will never make as much money fighting
    other opponent than DLH.

one snag in your theory .. Bob Arum

That would mean that floyd would have to negotiate under Arum's terms and I don't see that happening .. By retiring Floyd instantly put Arum in the Driver's seat of the 147 pound devision and it allows Arum to dictate purses and who fights who..
