There are no Mike Tysons or De La Hoyas coming up in the ranks. Really the prospects suck now compared to even 10-15 years ago. You had Vargas, Trinidad, De La Hoya, Mayweather etc. and there are no fighters that will capture the imagination of the casual viewer now. Saul Alvarez has the potential but when you look at the fighters I mentioned a second ago they were fighting the likes of Genaro Hernandez and Ike Quartey at his age. Considering most people I know haven't even heard of Floyd Mayweather I take that as a sign that boxing is almost a niche sport now. Prospects are really babied too much now and are fighting stiffs who they'll knock out in the first round for their first 30 fights. I have a bad feeling for boxing in the future. The only fighter that I think has that superstar spark is Juan Manuel Lopez. I have a very good feeling about this guy.
there are good fighters out there...but like you said, they will fight the least dangerous person until they get a title shot, then they will pick and choose who they wish to defend against...... pavlik seemed to burn out very quick....paul williams was on the track to be great, he wants to fight the best....but hes avoided.....the guy that just won 1 of the 3 wba middleweight titles, hes awesome.......gamboa, jm lopez, alot of the smaller guys are great, but seldon matched up
Think your right on juanma, an also fighters bein babied. Promoters seem more arsed about there fighters havin a 0 on there record than puttin on decent fights. you only have to look at calzaghe, yes he retired undefeated but only had 3 or 4 fights i which he was in danger of ever losin.
Back when Oscar, Vargas and Tito were stars, people were saying when they were gone boxing would have no more stars. What do you know, its 2010 and Mayweather, Pac, Cotto and up till recently, Hatton, were all box office stars and faces of boxing. Now, once again, people are saying there will be no more stars. It seems to be a never ending cycle or worry that boxing will not produce new, bankable talent that the public will gravitate to. When in all probability, a new crop of stars will come to take these one's place within 5 years.
One will always show itself unexpectedly just like hatton did, a steady buildup of interest from thepublic and suddenly he flies in over 30,000 fans thats special. Juanma Khan Bradley Alexander Kirkland possibly women love them some thug niccas david haye has potential over here but he needs to fight three times a year to gain consistent interest to bring over to the mainstream, problem is he lans on retiring next year and if true would end that possiblilty for obvious reasons. Ward? Froch is to old imo to be a supertar nd would need to do significant things in a short time period for this to happen. Cleverly? Degale?
it took ricky 38 fights to step up.....cotto and pac will fight anyone...anythime...aint scared of losing, contracts or size. hatton finally stepped up too...only one of the 4 doesnt dare to be great dont you rhink it would be a little more exciting if they fought each other? you talk about the greatness of tito, oscar and trinidad...superstars yes, throwbacks, no..... the 3 mega stars and they each fought each other 1 time. boxing will always have stars and belt holders and very view that want to make real history
david haye....give me a ****ing break. he has the ability if he didnt run his ***** mouth for 2 years about fighting the best....and we are still wating for hi to fight the guy he called out for the last 3 years.....might as well take his ass off your list
Dude in england is he ****ing massive everyone knows him because he beat the russian giant and nearly knocked him out, the average joe and women love him so STFU its a fact. Like i said he has/had the potential to be a face of boxing if he fought more regular.
Alvarez is the one. How old do you think he is, though? He turned 20 a couple months ago. How old do you think DLH and Vargas wer when they fought Ike? Years older... Alvarez is on his way, I have no idea how you can take fault with the path he's on.
Vargas was 20 when he beat Campas and 21 when he beat Winky, I think. Also yeah I'm probably being a bit harsh on Alvarez. I like the way he's being brought up but I don't know, I just don't see him being a PPV attraction but I love watching him fight and he seems like a nice guy.
Haye should have followed up his defeat of Valuev with another impressive performance. He would have been on his way to superstardom by now.
He still has the potential to do so as long as: he beats audley in dominant and brutal fashio. has three fights a year to keep his name out there. and doesnt retire when he is 30. imo what you think
