So Frank Warren and jay Larkin both gave you an account that made them look good and Hopkins look bad. How come that doesn't surprise me? Look, brother, I'm not saying that one version is right and the other version is wrong. All I'm saying is that unless you or I were closely involved in all parts of the negotiations, there is no way for us to be sure. You say you talked to Frank and Jay, I say I read a Hopkins saying something different. We're just a couple of guys on the 'net talking boxing, so who knows what is true?
Good point. I think people are pitting a 36 year old Clazaghe against a 'prime'* Hopkins. *Dont try and deduce when exactly Hopkins was prime; apparently he was green (at 28 years of age) when he was beaten by RJJ (Jones himself being 24) but past it in every other bad performance. Its 'tuff to argue against that.
If you'd have read the thread, we're talking about a prime Hopkins, so what does his style over the last few years(his forties) have to do with Hopkins in his prime? I assumed "a long time" meant his prime as well. Pretty safe assumption.
At least you think I apparently started with some Is that a description of his fight against Jones or Calzaghe then?:huh
We are just people talking...but I have met Frank several times and asked him about it. I met jay at a completely different time and his story was the very same. Hopkins gave an amount..it was accepted and the fight was on. One day later Hopkins backed out. I follow boxing very closely and I have never seen an article where hop disputes the offer...please point me to 1 if I am wrong.
I did. I recall you being a pretty good poster who makes good points on certain topics. Are you basically telling me this is a wind up then? His styles were exact opposites in these two fights. His deal was to box and move, countering and landing singular shots against Calzaghe. Against Jones, he was the presser.
Man, that was years ago when I read that article about Hopkins and the Showtime deal. I don't even remember which magazine or website I read it on. I guess I can't prove I read it just like you can't prove you talked to Frank and Jay. We can probably both agree that we wish the fight would have happened sooner.
Whether Hopkins pressed the action against RJ to any significant degree (he didnt, imo) is not relevant; the fact remains he was never able to land anything more telling or sustained than single punches and the odd three-punch flurry to the hip from the clinch. He couldnt land combos 'v' jones and couldnt 'v' a prime JoeC.
They weren't poor performances...just not his best. Nobody looks brilliant everday....what about Hop against Joppy, Strugglin with Mercado and Allen..many other non-descript opponents but it's ok for BHop and not Calzaghe...it's a very sad biassed opinion.
You realise most of the guys who score the fights for the likes of yahoo sports are 'sports writers' who couldnt name 5 world champions if their lives depended on it? Most people here and at other message boards scored the fight for Calzaghe. It wasnt controversial unless your location is Philidelphia.
Has any fighter ever landed a combo on a prime Jones? Are you implying that Joe is anywhere near as skilled defensively(or overall) as Jones?
