Another boxing expert asking for a change in the actual scoring system in his article
"Mayweather’s win signals death of boxing"

"Tolentino suggested that a change in scoring system is necessary to arrest the decline of the sport, “I think the scoring system will have to be overhauled to rectify the perception of the common fan that the defensive fighter is actually getting rewarded over the aggressive boxer. There must be a system in place where aggressiveness is actually encouraged and the safety approach is frowned upon and actually penalized,” Tolentino said.

No there mustn't. All fighting styles should be rewarded. Ineffective aggression is already given far too much credit on the cards of many judges.

I'd be ok with it if they implemented such a system

I don't agree with this idea actually because I think not allowing 10-10 rounds encourages aggression. Outside of Mayweather fights, generally aggression is encouraged and judges do score close rounds to the aggressor. To Floyd's credit, he is great at what he does and I don't think the issue is that aggression needs to be encouraged more. I think it is already encouraged due to judges not scoring close rounds 10-10. If judges scored more rounds 10-10, then there would be LESS focus on aggression.

Judges scoring Floyd fights kinda of take on a life of their own, and are really very different than other fights where aggressors are given the benefit of the doubt more than outboxers.

It is very important that boxing fans understand this phenomena.

The system is perfect, hit and not be hit, the fighters can approach this in any way they want the criteria is the same for all.

Although I think the aggressor should be rewarded in extremely close rounds with not much to seperate the two "punches-landed" wise.

    This system does rewards aggression.

If it happened, defensive fighters would be obsolete.

The art of boxing is to hit and not get hit, so why change the art just to please the blood thirsty casual boxing fans. If you don't like a certain boxers style then don't watch him box.

Yup and in many cases, ineffective aggression as well.

If they undermine defense more, then no one would prioritize defense.

It's funny, because I totally agree with you, the irony is they did change it. In the old days there were many even rounds, that all changed when they changed the title fight limit from 15 to 12 rounds. That is when they started discouraging even rounds, which subsequently encouraged people to be more aggressive. Which is why it's so amazing what Floyd has been able to do, in that his fights it's the opposite of that. Because he's that darn good. (Literally) In other fights these days we all know aggressors are generally favored by the judges.

I agree op, everyone is always complaining about ineffective aggresiveness though.

I think judges are too favourable to fighters on the backfoot myself, i normally give a bit of credit to the fighter making the fight as long as there throwing the other fighter off there game, backing them up and getting there own stuff in even if it is sloppy
