Yesterday I read two good interviews on Fan House; one with Sergio Martnez and one with Kelly Pavlik. Martinez boldly proclaimed that he will knock Pavlik out. Kelly, on the other hand, sounds like he plans to box Sergio's ears off. How's that for ass backwards?:think
Well, I dont know that Martinez can knock Pavlik out, he's not even a legitimate puncher at 154lbs. Martinez honestly has the body of a big welterweight, he's smallish for 154lbs, let alone 160lbs. If he wants to win he better keep avoiding Pavliks left for 12 rounds straight, and as Pavlik starts commiting with the double jab, just return fire. Pavlik can't handle feints, most certainly couldnt get out of the way of Bernards lead feint followed by a left hook.
I agree that Martines needs to stay clear the **** out the way.... But on the other hand, the last thing Pav needs to do is *****-foot around in there trying to give a Floyd Mayweather impression. He'd better try his best to get Sergio out of there.
Yep, Pavlik will fight the way he always fights, like I said prior to Clottey - Pacquiao, these guys don't change habits overnight. Pavlik sets up everything behind a solid, fundamental jab.. Martinez is awkward and hard to land jabs on, he tilts slightly as he moves around, making it near impossible to touch him with single jabs. If Pavlik gives him some looks with the lead right hand, I think Martinez will be brought out of his comfort zone and start moving in with 1-2s and 1-2-3's like he did with Williams when Williams was touching him slightly on the outside. Only thing against Pavlik thats going to be hard as Kelly throws with mean intentions from close-mid and long range. Aswell as digs to the body. I expect Martinez to fade late and get TKO'd or lose a decision, but up untill that point it'll be an entertaining fight if Martinez can slip and return fire from that tilting stance.
His first fight post Bhop, Kelly and his camp floated all sorts of hints that he would box more. They even worked the word "YOGA" into the conversation. Kelly was promptly criticized for not bulldozing Marco "Running Man" Rubio. Kelly has always said that he goes out to box and takes the KO if it comes. Nothing new on his part. Can you blame him for concentrating on boxing more post Bhop? Sergio? Well, in fairness, he did KO Cintron and with a bit more time in the first may have KO'd Williams. Now, you have to ask yourself, "Is there perhaps a bit of a difference between Kermit/Paul and Kelly?
While he shook them up he clearly did not actually separate them from their senses, and they're not filling out 160lbs as Pavlik has been doing for years. In Williams case he's slowly and surely maturing physically and is getting there.. as far as the KD goes, that was sloppy getting caught wildly like that, but thats how it goes to show how little respect Williams had for Sergios power.
I think Pavlik will box for 2 and half rounds then proceed to pressuring behind the jab and overhand right.
Sounds about right to me. However, if KP comes in looking for a boxing match, and Sergio comes in looking for a KO, the fight could produce some fairly serious WHAT THE ****atsch moments!
Well Pavlik and his team were confident that Kelly would ko Hops but it didn't go that way. I can't blame Pavlik for wanting to box more and double the jab.
It's not like Kelly is a totally **** boxer, though. Maybe he just wants to box more efficiently, with power. Then pour it on when he's slowed down his opponent.
That's pretty much his standard game plan. He did not build an 86% KO ratio with one punch power. He's heavy handed enough, and skilled enough, that he can and does uses skills to create the opportunity to put those heavy hands to work.
