He may have been on his feet but he wasn't ready to fight as I recall. How much time lapsed while he cried to the ref?

Martinez has decent defense when he uses a conventional stance...only problem is, he rarely does that. Most of the time, his defense is predicated off of his great reflexes...which is going to be fine against fighters with marginal handspeed like a Cintron or a Bunema...but against a fighter who is, even if you dont feel he is of Martinez speed...much faster than the two, that can be a HUGE liability.

I just don't see Pdub as 'blazing, it could because of his length I suppose. I've wondered if that makes him seem slower than some shorter guys like Winky by comparison.

But you did answer my question. He does have a conventional defense. If he sees Pdub as 'fast' then can we expect to see him 'forced' to it? Like I said, I don't know enough about the guy. May be a good gauge for us in terms of Pdub's speed though. If he keeps his hands up more, then HE thinks Pdub is fast.

There is more to it than the speed issue. Work rate is just as important. Against a guy who throws non-stop the way PW does you need to maintain a nice high and tight gaurd at all times. If you do not, the shear volume of punches coming at you virtually guarantees that something big will catch you.

i think sergio martinez could be a tougher fight for williams then pavlik wouid have been. he will really have to rise to the occasion on this one.

People sorely underrate his speed because of the length of his arms...its deceptive. But vs Winky, he was clearly, CLEARLY faster.

And yes, he does have a conventional defense, but when he uses it, his own offense isnt as effective. His up jab from the stance with his hands low is a great weapon...and he fights off of it very well. If he stays in his guard, his jab will be more straight on, which again plays away from his strengths. And against Williams, going away from what got you to where you are isnt the best idea...tho it would definately be unexpected.

If he raises his guard, he does so at the cost of his offense...if he fights to his strengths (behind the upjab), he puts himself in a very dangerous position vs a fighter like Paul.

I think Sergio is a great fighter and Im a big fan...but I think his strengths will prove to be weaknesses vs Williams.
