Carlos Monzon (Not 80s or 90s but wanted to throw him in because of threads regarding him lately) Marvin Hagler Roy Jones Jr James Toney Mike McCallum Bernard Hopkins Tommy Hearns Michael Nunn Nigel Benn How does each fighter do? The best? The worst? Anyone do better than Greb?
I reckon Jones would seem like an alien to the guys Greb fought, given how fast he was. I will say Roy, Hagler and BHop will fare the best, but all will do well, they are much more skilled than the guys Greb fought. But some of Greb's opponents were HWs, so those might pose some problems, but I still favor the 80s and 90s guys.
I think Mike Gibbons runs through that list. Loughran runs thru that list , Tunney runs thru that list , Mickey Walker runs thru that list.
I don't think they are more skilled than Gibbons, Walker or Tunney. They are all amazing on their own of course, but calling them "much more skilled" is too much for my taste.
Just going with the Greb opponent's I know inside out, so I'm confident in my picks. I need to know how they fought, so it's; Walker, Mike/Tommy Gibbons, Tunney, Loughran, Houck, McTigue, O'Dowd, Rosenbloom, and Flowers. Under the schedule that Greb fought these and others, I have no doubt that every fighter on this list picks up more losses than Greb did. But I'm just gonna decide how these guys would do in the same number of fights that Greb had with them. So how many they win in four with Tunney, three with Gibbons, five with Loughran, etc. I think Monzon is favourite over Walker, for a start. He has the style to defuse someone like Walker's offense, and make him really ****ing angry he'd just keep shutting down his work, and then lacing him with counters and combos. I think defensive specialists like the Gibbons brothers end up losing. Especially Mike, that'd be a pseudo-Hearns/Benitez IMO. Tommy does better, but I still think he faces the same sort of issues, and doesn't get very far. I see no reason to favour either of these. I don't think that they'd go without a win over six fights between them, though. Monzon isn't beating Tunney or Loughran, though. Not a chance. Houck is capable of beating anybody, but again, I see no reason to make him favourite. McTigue vs Monzon would probably be the most boring fight ever O'Dowd would give Monzon a good fight. The steady pressure he employed does remind me of Bennie Briscoe, who somewhat troubled Monzon. That said, Monzon was ultimately, extremely dominant in their rematch and I think he'd out-class O'Dowd. Rosenbloom at that point was probably too green to be favoured over Monzon, and Flowers gets stopped badly all three times IMO. A southpaw vs Monzon's right doesn't sound pretty. Hagler's awful for Walker, who struggled with boxers and southpaws, whilst Hagler was brilliant at countering aggressive sluggers and then turning off. Definitely a Hagler win. Walker isn't the hyper aggressive style that Vito was, and Hagler hadn't quite matured into the finished product when he fought Briscoe IMO. Hagler's back-up pressuring style was as potent as anyone's. He'd get to both brothers and beat them IMO. He'd be able to out-box Mike at range as well, but I think he's better suited to hunting them down and making sure they can't establish a rhythm. Same again for Tunney, Loughran, Houck and McTigue. O'Dowd likely gets the Hamsho treatment. Hard to see another result, based in style. It would be far more competitive than the Hamsho fights, but O'Dowd isn't winning these. Rosenbloom, again, is likely too green for Hagler, and Tiger gets stopped. Hagler was a beast vs other southpaws, and inside the ring, he'd have no respect for Flowers. It's only a matter of time. Jones is too quick for all of them IMO, and he's both big enough and good enough (ability-wise and stylistically) to beat all of them. If anyone is going to clean this slate, it's Jones. I think he'd likely drop one or two to Tunney or Loughran, but other than that, he goes undefeated. Stopping most of them, as well. Walker is right in Toney's wheelhouse. That'd be a great fight, 50/50 IMO. The Gibbons brothers present hard styles for James, and I think they'd likely get the better of him. Noway he beats Tunney and Loughran. He could definitely drop a fight to Houck, but he'd beat the **** out of McTigue and O'Dowd. Rosenbloom has an outside chance, and so does Flowers. I'd probably take JT over both, though. McCallum does similar to Toney, apart from that I see him doing better vs the Gibbons brothers, but worse vs Walker. Hopkins likely does the second best after Jones. Beats Walker, M/T Gibbons, Houck, McTigue, O'Dowd, Rosenbloom, and Flowers, but falls short of beating Loughran and Tunney. Hearns gets stopped by Walker, but would out-point Mike, and likely, Tommy, too. Gets beaten decisively by Tunney and Loughran, but beats up Houck and McTigue. Good chance O'Dowd stops him, but he'd out-box Loughran and stop Flowers IMO. Nunn is exactly the sort of fighter who Walker would lose to. He'd also be awful for the Gibbons brothers, but be out of his depth vs the two premier LHWs. Beats Houck ans McTigue. Probably beats O'Dowd, but his issues with Barkley give me pause. He could lose that one. But he should be favoured over Rosenbloom, and Flowers. Benn would get stopped in one of the most wild brawls of all-time with Walker, and get soundly out-boxed by The Gibbons bros. God, imagine what a beating Tunney would've given him. Houck would give him a war, and likely win. McTigue would KOed trying to hold on IMO. O'Dowd would beat him in another war, and Rosenbloom would probably out-point him. Flowers gets KOes again IMO.
