He's not in GG's weight class. Canelo Weight is 154, he's the WBO champ. 155 was Cotto weight, he was the MW champ and that was the only weight Cotto would fight Canelo at. Canelo taking that fight had nothing to do with Golovkin, he took the fight because that was the biggest fight available at the time, and the fight the public was demanding. Canelo winning that didn't make him start ducking GG.

Canelo's goal after beating Cotto, was to fight for a 154-lb title. He was trying to make the Smith fight, but realized he couldn't compete for that title while holding the MW belt. Khan came along and offered to fight Canelo at 155 for the MW title Canelo had. After that win, it was clear that the only way he could fight Smith was by dropping that title.

You can't really duck someone at a weight you've never fought at before. Yes he held the MW title, but it was won at a catchweight under highly unusual conditions.

Now that he's a title holder at 154, what does fighting Willie Monroe do for Canelo? There are bigger fights at 154 where he can defend his title. If Canelo moves up to 160 I'd say he should go directly into a title fight with Golovkin for all the MW belts. It'll be more impressive if Canelo fights GG without establishing himself as a Middleweight. Having a LMW Champ fight the MW champ adds intrigue.

Canelo is making history. He made history when he captured the MW title, on Cotto's terms. That's a fact Jack. That happened to start the desire to want to see Canelo vs Golovkin, but that was not Canelo's intention. He fought Cotto as that was the biggest name out there. He made history, then he made history again, and again. Re-writing history would be ignoring the fact that the 155 catchweight was Cotto's demand, and calling it Canelo weight. Re-writing history would be ignoring that Cotto didn't pay the sanctioning fees and didn't even give himself a chance to retain his own title. Canelo got lumped into the GG conversation for winning that title, in a weight class he never fought at before. But if he doesn't fight Cotto, then what? Then would Canelo have been ducking Cotto? Lets get straight what re-writing history is, and who's defining what that is.
