Iyo, which fight s were these Heavyweight classic s Peak Performance s? Jack Dempsey Sonny Liston Jersey Joe Walcott Ezzard Charles Jack Johnson Evander Holyfield Mike Tyson Larry Holmes
I'd say Dempsey V Willard Liston v Folley Walcott v Louis 1 Charles v Maxim Johnson v Langford 1906 Holyfield v Bowe 2 Tyson v Tucker Holmes v Cooney.
Jack Dempsey vs Willard Sonny Liston vs Patterson 1 or 2 Jersey Joe Walcott vs Marciano 1 Ezzard Charles vs Louis Jack Johnson vs Jeffries Evander Holyfield vs Douglas Mike Tyson vs Berbick Larry Holmes vs Leon
I'm certainly no expert on Johnson, some on here are a lot more knowledgeable in regard the man, but I think the win over another great fighter in Langford what a great performance. Not long after he won the title but did he ever really as good a fighter from there on. Yes he faced Jeffries but he was well past best. Not that I believe Johnson as champ couldn't have beat most if not all the contenders out there if need be but for what ever reason he never did. A little like Dempsey, who people knock for not fighting the best, It's my opinion that Jack in shape, as champ, could have defeated most of not all top guns back then. Anyway just my opinion, I'm. Quite happy to be corrected on the Johnson v Langford fight.
Willard I'll say Williams 2 or Machen. Although it could quite possibly be Valdez. Charles 3 or Louis 1. Again, could be a fight with no footage. For me it's the Louis fight, although his strategy allowiga him to go 15 with Rocky deserves a mention. Can't say, not seen enough of him. Bowe 1? Even though he lost it was a brilliant fight from Evander. Possibly Douglas. Tyson's? Holmes maybe. I like the Ali fight for Holmes. It's a brutal display of top boxing.
I was a little undecided about Tyson and Holmes s Peak fights tbh, yes could say Tyson ko Holmes could be his p fight, after all Larry s a ATG. The only thing putting me off was Holmes fighting condition at the time, but then again we can't knock Tyson for this, he did ko Holmes, somethin that never happened again.
I think McVea was a much better win for Johnson, as were others. The big thing is Langford hadn't really done anything at heavyweight at that stage
Yeah but why the hell did you pick the Tucker fight as his best, Ferguson? Tyson looked sluggish and carrying too much weight and never looked close to stopping Tucker. Maybe you’re one of those people who thought it was a good performance by Tyson because you thought that the overrated Tucker was a elite fighter because he beat Douglas in his previous fight? Well he wasn’t and just looked to survive against Tyson the entire fight even though Tyson was off his game in that bout. Tyson performances against Berbick, Thomas, Biggs, Holmes, Tubbs and Spinks were all far better than the one against Tucker.
Yeah you could be right there. Even though Ali was a shadow of his former self, Holmes looked lean and mean in this fight, He looked like he got into the best shape of his life and was determined as never before to fight at his best and finally get the m onkey off his back against those who thought he was just a poor man’s Ali. Edit. WTF? I can’t even post the word M onkey without some fool thought police here making out it’s a racist word and having it being completely censored? FFS!!
Are you saying that Tubbs, Spink s, Thomas etc were In better shape than Tucker at the time of their fights with Tyson Silver??? Yes, Thomas was a excellent fighter but that was about 3 years past, Tubbs?? Good fighter again but for the Tyson fight.....
I've been delving in to Johnson s history a bit, the Mcvea was a good one as like say others. It is a little hard I've discovered to actually pin down Jack's peak performance. I'm of the opinion still that it came before the title, being frozen out of the picture obviously for his best years by the crap racial situation. I still reckon the Langford fight was a great win for Jack and proved to a point how good he was, even at his age and numerous hard bitter fights.
I'm no where vaguely close to finishing it (and I'm not sure I ever will), but I posted a load of info here https://www.boxingforum24.com/threads/jack-johnson-and-the-black-heavyweights-a-chronology.618894/
Nice one, thanks. It's an interesting read, I'm getting all I can about Jack and that Era at the moment so anything about it is great
