Larry Merchant: 'Does the champion want to keep his championship as much as the challenger wants to take it?' This quote got me thinking: which champions can you think of who, to begin with, were hungry and ferocious, well-schooled challengers who later became insipid champions when they reached the pinnacle of the sport? Posted this on the general as well to see if there is a difference of opinion. Any thoughts are wecome... :good
Not sure about long term, but Rahman was certainly more hungry than Lennox first time around. That could be complacency.
michael nunn - won the title against frank tate. looked a million dollars in that fight. :bbbwent west after that one. :-(
but rahman was no real prospect was he. just a guy that would win some and lose some. then hit a homerun against lennox.
if ever a fight knocked something out of a man. :-( very few stood in front of trinidad and got away with it. atsch
It's fairly simple, Djoc. Who showed promise as a challenger, became a champion, and then completely went south and were never the same after they reached the top?:think:good EDIT: Just saw your last post. I did the same yesterday with the 'who needs them thread'atsch.
for some reason i think Vargas would have won that had it not been for the low blows still think the results after the fight would have been the same.
I thought I was watching a future all time great when Goyo Vargas stopped Hoko for the WBC Feather title. Lost it in his first defence (admitedly to Kevin Kelley)
one of the most perfect knockouts ever that. sweet as a nut. :yep but that aside. he even had a boring fight against iran barkley.
