That ref was totally incompetent. If you watch the fight his pre fight instructions consisted of " Head Head & Hold Hold" he couldn't speak English. It was hard to watch the fight you could see something was badly wrong with MsClellen He was continually blinking & spitting his mouthpiece out. That ref, McClellens corner men & the doctors failed McClellen badly. Who was it called McClellen a quitter when he went down to his knees ? I wonder how he felt afterwards

Terrible refereeing in the 1st round the referee seemed to do everything in his power to help Benn survive that round. Not too mention all the rabbit punches Benn consistently landed throughout the fight.

All those things combined leaves a bit of sour taste in my mouth along with the awful tragedy of course.

If it was on pay per view, then it probably doesn't make much difference, thought obviously I wouldn't enjoy the experience.

If it was live, then it would probably be at the back of my mind, when I was making the arrangements for the next one.

On a side note I have seen people die, while I was working at a hospital, and I have discovered the body of a suicide victim.

    You were there live?!
Did you, or the crowd in general, realize what was happening to Gerald as the fight went on? Watching it on television, especially knowing after the fact, you can see McClellan blinking and blinking, indicating something was wrong above and beyond being in a brutal fight.
I doubt there’s any other fighter, maybe even athlete, who suffered such a terrible fate, and yet due to his torturing of dogs, is so despised and regarded as having deserved what happened to him.

    Completely fair ...

My dad saw and participated in live armed combat and lived over 50 years with bullet fragments lodged too close to spine to operate properly - when you grow up hearing war stories from his friends about the screams and the eyes flickering on a mate who's dying in arms, you quickly desensitise from stuff. Plus, I grew up in London and saw enough dirt to have what I consider a fairly thick skin in response to most things.

When it comes to the boxing game, I take a liberal view. If men want to sign up for the ish, it's a bit like watching gladiators in the Colosseum or Christians thrown to Simba's folks - every now and then, Mufasa's gonna catch something.

In a sadistic way, a bit like watching car crash TV, the more brutal a fight, the more entertained the fans seem to be. Very rare that a chess match fight between two stylists draws consensus positive feedback in today's game, especially when you have the likes of UFC putting on decent cards and boxing suffering from politricks and mockeries of what being a world champion is.

I was in the cheap seats but even so his seemingly sudden defeat seemed strange. We naturally all thought he had quit but on viewing it on tape you could appreciate there was something wrong with Gerald.

It was an emotional night, we had previously seen Lloyd Honeyghan get battered in 3 and sent into retirement in a sad fight with Adrian Dobson. Then see the great Mike McCallum in the flesh before the main event. We all expected Benn to lose and when he was sent out of the ring we thought it was the end.

The whole crowd got behind him and it was amazing how he survived and started to come back into it. Knocking out McClelland´s mouthguard and then surviving was seemed to end in the eighth. At the end of the night couldn´t find a taxi or bus to take us home, walked for 2 hours in the freezing cold but was so pumped up that I didn´t care.
