Hey guys, I'm thinking about joining a gym in the Hartford area come summertime (away at college till the middle of May). I'm 6'1 roughly 235 lbs. I'm overweight, not really strong, and my conditioning sucks. I've been watching Friday Night Fights for a good 6 years and feel like I have a pretty good understanding of the sport. Anyways I'm looking to get into shape. Right now I can do about 17 push ups and I just ran a 10:39 mile. Every day I've been running a mile, doing 20 yd sprints, and push-ups to exhaustion, and I just ordered a speed rope. (buying a heavy bag and gloves after I graduate in May) Other than eating right, is this going to put me on the right track to get into enough shape so I won't look like a fool my first gym session in 2 months? And what else should I be doing to get into shape and what should my ultimate goal weight be?
Just go to the gym, train and have fun. Everything will sort itself out providing you eat healthy. far too many guys on here overthink everything.
Maybe he just don't want to get embarrased by his strengt/conditioning. It's intimidating for alot of people to go to a boxing gym for the first time. I know I was intmidated. To OP: As Matty said, just go to the gym, you will get in better shape as you train. Nobody at the gym cares if you're in bad shape, just be humble and willing to learn :thumbsup
I just don't wanna pay someone $40-60/hr and not be in shape and able to keep up with the workout. Kind of seems like a waste of money. I'd rather get in shape first then be able to focus on mechanics etc, rather than being tired.
Ya I am just starting to box now as well and it is about 75 dollars a month... Don't be afraid to atleast try out a few gyms.
What is included in the price? do you have to sign up for bag times etc? and you cant use the ring right?
Is there no cheaper gyms? from what I hear the real expensive ones are ****, they are usually very modern and clean looking but are filled with boxercisers and wannabe boxing coaches and tough guys. The good gyms are usually cheaper surprisingly, at least thats what I hear. Maybe It's different in the USA or maybe I'm just wrong.
nah Matty in the US thats how it is too- the more oldschool the better. a good sign is if it smells of sweat, blood, and hardwork, and the walls are filled with old school boxing posters and nostalgic photos of the past
Everything is included and there is no contract or potential recurring costs if you decided to leave the gym. (basically payment is month to month or you can pay for a few months upfront if you wanted) I also agree with the sentiment that the good gyms are cheap gyms and maybe are considered "hole in the walls".
