This is a decision I will make alone with the help of my physicians (one is a neurologist and he is a down to earth guy) I have made threads here in the past about getting in shape (I was out of shape due to metabolism damaging medication(s)), but up until the age of 18 I was a true athlete - trained 6 times a week, played rugby and tennis and soccer (goalkeeper) and even now I enjoy lifting as I have told you lot in the past. I am in decent shape at 17st 12 (250lbs) but when I was obsessed with sports I was at least a stone lighter. This was when I would run on my "off" days just for the enjoyment. My weight loss is much in due to boxing styled training (though I still lift), and at 22 I think that I should give it a shot. I have a headache condition, according to one neurologist should not be a problem, but I do rely on my brain for an awful lot. Anyone been in my position? By the way, I am not a complete stranger to boxing. I have done a hell of a lot more than those trailer park folks So, in short, I would like to know if boxing has had any negative effects on cognitive function. Cheers.
I wouldn't know. I don't rely on my brain for much. Kidding, kidding. I think I killed more brain cells in a summer of heavy drinking than in three and a half years of boxing. But your brain is getting knocked around inside your head so it's a decision you'd have to make knowing that.
I too have killed more brain cells with vodka, whiskey and special brew than I likely will by boxing at amateur level. I do not intend to go pro' but I feel it would be a terrible shame not to have a few amateur fights. Scotland has a few decent boxing clubs so I will continue with my usual training - bag work, skipping, powerlifts, interval training etc and lose 14 lbs. Then if everything shows up well on the MRI I will stick at it for 6 months. I reckon that I have some brain cells that can go to hell :yep Thanks Amy - I was hoping you would respond.
if its risk assesssement your after, boxing is safe....drinking is far more dangerous with all the crap that goes with it..... unprotected sex drugs uncontroled violence ect....
Keep losing your pounds and go for it. Not only amateur boxing is great for the mind, even if you lose, but you will also get a greater understanding of boxing and watching fights will be much more exciting. Dont worry about brain damage. At the amateur level, unless you get KOed all the time or do over 100 fights, i think you will be fine.
Thanks for all the input guys. I will be in the gym for most of November and December as I had time off due to an ankle injury (that I documented here). The ankle is stable so it will be traditional boxing work with added weights (because I enjoy weight training). After the New Year I will get some sparring scheduled. I know some big guys that are serious about their training and can help me along. Thanks again, and if you have any other advice/warnings, feel free to add :good
I have taken the following; Escitalopram Fluoxetine Paroxetine Duloxetine Venlafaxine Sertraline Valproate Lamotrigine Chlorpromazine Sulpride Haloperidol Diazeapm Temazeapm Alprazolam Clozapine Arirprazole Olanzapine (had a bad reaction to that one) Quetiapine Risperidone Amitriptyline Sumitriptan And a few more I cannot remember. I suffered from Bipolar depression causing self mutilation, in addition to migraine and cluster headache. I also have other minor neurological hindrances. I am fixed now.
