Anybody in my gym, taking liberties in Sparring, would find the next people they would be sparring with, would either be the European Heavyweight champ. Or the European Cruiser weight champ, this they were told before they sparred. This was told to them in no uncertain Terms. :yep.
Ya, I agree. Questioning your coach's judgement is one way to get a coach to hate you, and not put your safety first. Shouldn't be that way - people should be more mature. But reality is, if you're dealing with a bully of a coach - this would be begging for even more bullying - at your expense. Plus, if my coach asked me to spar with someone 100 lbs heavier, I would trust him 100% to make sure the big guy don't take liberties. Or the big dude already understands without being told. If neither of these are true - then clearly this gym and coach is bull****.
Any coach who hates you for questioning him ain't ****. What competent professional makes an overtly stupid decision then gets angery and endangers your safety when you question his decision? Any competent trainer would logically explain to you why you are doing what you are doing. If they can't explain it is because they don't know, and the reason they don't know is incompetence.
Don't hesitate if you are unhappy. It's a tough situation in something as macho as a boxing gym, but ultimately a good trainer is not going to put you in a situation where you are going to be at the mercy of anyone without really a care. If your coach puts you in with someone heavier, it doesn't mean you will be going to war with the guy, there might be some method to what seems like madness. To see how you react to someone bigger than you, teach you to outmaneuver him, and so on. However if a dude 100lbs heavier on just started basically beating you up on the inside for half an hour, that gym is bull****, what was the point of that? Maybe again some macho bull**** test, but that isn't how athletes are made.
Bro leave this gym now! If he doesnt care about your saftey when sparring, he prob wont care about you when hes matching you to fight. Would you really trust this man to find you decent matchups in a tough sport like boxing. Do you really think he has your saftey at heart. The trainer sounds like bit of a dick, why was he sparring? Is he one of those coaches who likes to bash up his novice boxers? Also where are you based mate?
It's harsh to judge a coach off of one training session. There may well be some method to his madness. Sparring 9 rounds just inside fighting against fighters of different weights is not completely worthless, it can build character and toughness if nothing else ..... but if the coach makes you do that every session then obviously that's ridiculous. Yes, I think it's overreacting to want to walk out after just that one session.
what you write makes sense ,,always ask the coach the reasons for all your questions & if he tells you bull**** ,tell him hes an idiot ,,,careful not to burn bridges the other clubs may not be any better
Terrible advice. There are different ways and far safer to build character and toughness without getting your brain blasted to bits by someone 100 pounds heavier by 9 rounds. Pointless drill.atsch
When you get mugged, what you gonna say to your assaailant, "Sorry old chap, you can't mug me cos you're in a different weight class!"
I didnt know mugging was a sport, be serious will you. If somebody hold a gun on my head or a knife on my belly, be sure that i wouldnt do anything. 100 bucks and a mobile phone isnt worth my life. There are no benefits to that specific "drill", if you can even call it that.
My 2 cents worth leave that gym there are loads of gym in NYC, find one where you might fit in. I have a few years in this and have been in many gyms, in NYC, Jersey, Texas, Chicago, Mexico City, Poland and have never heard of any of what you related. FYI, sparring bigger guys or smaller guys is for timing and speed purposes from what I understand. For the bigger guy in this, the 229 guy, if he can catch you with shots he will do well cos he will be fighting guys his weight and they wont be able to match the speed of a '29pdr. Joe Louis used to spar with '26pdrs for that reason. Now for the flip side, a guy weighing 129 has to throw heavy to keep the guy off him, so he is hauling off cos he's faster, and therein lies the problem. The smaller guys timing will be off when he does fight guys his own weight. Also the risk of injury is greater for the smaller guys.
in boxing it can be very difficult to keep the kids interested ,,there as to be groups of different levels for the lads or girls to learn of each other as they improve moving along with experience ,,to many times the coach's don't know what drills to do witch are relevant to boxing, so they end up sparing the good with the bad & the bad become a punch bags & don't bother going back to the gym (Faking hate coaching that use sparing as an excuse to what a fight ) sorry meant to send this to another question
