Hey all. Big weekend of fights this weekend, enjoy! I'm thinking of switching trainers for a couple reasons. 1. Our gym is possibly the filthy dirtiest place I've ever set foot in. 2. Ring and equipment are worn out. I have nicer equipment at home. 3. My trainer, while very knowledgeable, is unprofessional. 4. My trainer doesn't give me the type of or amount of instruction I'm looking for. Problem is, I feel like a traitor. Also, there are no gyms close and I might have to hire a private trainer one day a week, then do my work at home. Hopefully I can find someone with a group of students or access to a group to spar with. What are your thoughts?
Boxing gyms are supposed to be grimey. The first gym I ever visited had blood mixed with spit all over their restroom. This isn't golf or high school varsity sports.
I would personally stay but if its difficult to training maybe better to move on but only you can make the decision.
if you are not getting the attention you want find a new gym, but if there are no other gyms in the area you can train at then i would stay where you are
Who are you gonna spar with if you leave your gym and just hire a private trainer. Unless you don't want to spar and aren't training to compete, rather for fitness and fun (which is fine). But that would explain why your trainer isn't spending much time with you.
Hire a private trainer but stay a member of the gym. Boxing clubs aern't like these rich health clubs and big fitness chains. A lot of times they are run by guys who make next to no money out of the gym and just do it for the love of the sport. I don't know a rich boxing trainer.
I think this is what I'm gonna do. I talked to another trainer who runs a gym across town today, and plan to stop by there next week. Its about 15 min further away, but might be worth it. Right now I'm learning the basics and getting in shape. Once I get to the next level, if a coach thinks I could compete, I'd be all for it. I'm looking to spar, but I want to learn something and not just show up once a week to brawl, which is what happens at the gym I go to now.
Yeah thats no good. IMO sparring should be controlled and focused. Save the real fights for the matches unless you are doing all out sparring for cardio. Thats just my philo.
Hmmm idk what to tell you, the reason I switched trainers was because he wasn't teaching me anything.. just throwing me on a bag and tells me to hit it. I know it feels like you're betraying them, but it's your career.. you gotta do what you gotta do
to the OP, do what you wanna do, look after yourself, everyone else does. Dont be scared to leave your trainer if you want to.
My first gym was horrid to say the least. There were supersized cockroaches on the wall and floor late at night. Normally there was no toilet paper in the bathroom which always caused someone to find some unique way to wipe there ass with something other than toilet paper. This was the bathroom I had to change in prior to my workout for about three years. My previous coach was a slime ball. He was ****ing one of the ladies in the dirty gym since his pregnant wife was at home and he was too cheap to get a hotel. Aside from all of this stuff. I learned so much while also trying to teach other people to clean the gym once a week. I now like working out at the new gym when the gym is empty to avoid all the filthy people coming and going without showing any respect by picking up after themselves.
If there's a nearby university, they might have a boxing 'club' where you could find people to spar with.
@ cheech - Yes, our gym is nearly 50 yrs in operation and I don't think its been cleaned once in that time. There might be cleaner bathrooms in Turkish prisons. This is a cleaner bathroom than our gym has: This content is protected @ vibit - I've tried that, but I'm fifteen years older and 100lbs heavier than everyone at the uni, and I just don't fit in at all. Actually, the coaches at the local uni's are all trained by my coach, so a lot of those guys come to our sparring sessions. @ Dish - I don't want to give the wrong impression. My gym is a good place with good intentions, but I'm looking for something more organized and yes, less filthy. That being said, I've called around and found that in my city, there are 8 boxing clubs. A few are either too far to drive to or are in a part of town I'm not going to, so that leaves about four clubs I plan to check out. Last night was my first night at a different gym and I liked it, although its about a 30 min drive for me. Its a neighborhood gym and there were all types of people training there. Some were MMA, some boxing. Young, old, men, women and children were there. Very diverse crowd and I met some cool people. I took my daughter (shes 13) and we did some bag work and later she took some pics while I did mitts with the trainer. I think we will go back next week for the full class, and I've scheduled some individual time with the trainer. We did 3 rounds on the mitts and I learned 3 things that seemed basic, but my previous coach hadn't shown me. 1. Hold your guard tight against your head. If your hands are loose when you get hit, it rattles your head more. Also, my guard was too high. 2. Exhaling while throwing or taking punches, like a grunt, helps you keep fresh and absorb shots. 3. He showed me a way to wind up the jab, which has a different step movement than I am used to, so I have to work on that.
