Holmes and Tyson were head and shoulders above everyone in that decade. Who takes third spot ? Here's a few suggestions -

    Michael Spinks
    Greg Page
    Michael Dokes
    Tim Witherspoon
    Evander Holyfield *

    * Holyfield had scored some signifigant victories by the end of '89.

Probably Witherspoon.. Although a prime Pinklon Thomas beat a prime WItherspoon, Also when Holmes was fading . Some thought Pinklon was the best Hw for a short period,.. He faded quick though was not in good conidtion for Berbick and never the same again.

Spinks didnt stick around long enough.. Page was to inconsistant and lost to a variety of HWs... Holyfield came to late... Dokes was hot for a bit then dissapeared and came back in the late 80s... HTH i think COoney was definitely top 5 80s hw in his prime.

Thomas actually made the Ring's pfp top ten in 1985 (maybe 84) and was ahead of Holmes.

That is correct i was gonna mention that he was one of the few HWs to make the pfp list.. He is forgotten because his prime didnt last long,,But he had a great jab, good Punch, excellent chin, fairly quick solid all around skills.. I would say a Prime Pinklon would have been about evenly matched with the Kilitchkos, especially Wlad.. ... Only other hws i can think of in the last 30 years are Holmes,Thomas,Spinks,Tyson,Bowe,Douglas,Holyfield,Lewis,Wlad and sometimes you see Vitali in there.... Of all those hws, Tyson was the only one to reach number 1.

Anyone here think Cooney would have beat the best of the rest hws in HTH matchups? Im not sure but i think he is on par with a prime Thomas and Prime Witherspoon....and would have probably beat the rest.

Witherspoon, for his quality wins over Page, Bonecrusher, Tubbs & Bruno. Plus a very close controversial shave with a great version of Holmes.

I am however very confused as to why Greg Page (very inconsitent!) & Michael Dokes made the poll, but not Tony Tucker? I think Tucker has a better record & is better H2H than both of those guys. He went 34-0 before losing to Peak Tyson, & beat a very good, well conditioned Prime Buster Douglas. Also he was ducked by Ring Champ Michael Spinks, who threw his IBF title in the trashcan & chose to face a very rusty Past-Prime Cooney rather than the formidable Peak Tucker.
