No boxer has ever gotten better when they were in their 40s compared to their 20s and 30s, Moore wasnt a defensive fighter, he was a guy who came and tried to knock you out. Walcott was done as a top level fighter and the fact is he wasnt a heavyweight either by modern standards. The only reason Marciano fought these fighters because he knew they were past their best

toney weighed 183 or 184 on the night he lost his 168 title to roy.
so marciano could have easily made 175 , even make a 170 catchweight with tito.
also read about carl olson , john mugabi , these caught weight.
archie moore was bigger than marciano in any (physical) aspect , including dry weight. he is an example of someone who barely made 175 (with the weight-cutting techniques known to him). again : marciano would have made 175 easily.
rocky defeated walcott for his title , a legitimate reigning world champion , and a good one , at that. unlike roy defeating ruiz and claiming he's the hw champion of the world.
rocky defended his title against the best available oponents he could get. it can't be said about jack johnson (ducked a prime langford)
nor about dempsey who wouldn't fight blacks.

I am not ruling out that Marciano could have made 175 today but you are perhaps not taking into acount the extreme lengths he went to to get down to 185 lbs.

He might have weighed as much as Archie Moore in the ring but I think he was somewaht bigger when he walked the street.

Definitely. Marciano was naturally a 200-210 pound man. He trained himself to an insane regiment down to the 180's and that was low. Goldman kept him from limiting his eating. He would never make 175 with his bone/body structure in my opinion. He would not be able to fight at that weight. No way, not effectively at least.

I think George Foreman is the ONE guy who actually was a better fighter in a technical sense at age 40 than he was at age 25...... Physically speaking, no, Foreman was lean and ripped at 220 pounds back in his youth, compared to his bulky and rotund appearance at age 40...... But still, skillwise, yes, Foreman was better at age 40.....

I never liked Foreman fighting between 250 to 260 pounds for the later part of his second comeback in the late 80s thru 1997.......... I thought Foreman looked solid and strong at 244 pounds when he TKO'd clubfighter Rocky Sekorski on ESPN in 1987.....

In 1988, Foreman dipped down to 235 for Qawi...... Foreman was the leanest of his comeback, but he claimed he felt drained, and 235 quickly became 257......... Foreman was buffed and strong as an Ox for Holy at 257 pounds, but also slower than Molasses......

Again, Foreman at 40+ and 240 to 245 pounds more-than-likely would've been Foreman's optimum fighting weights........ Cheers.....

Ay well you're a newspaper man, get diggin'.

A lot of Johnson's early folk like Denver Ed Martin and Frank Childs were some realy stern early tests and he came out with flying colours.

What if Johnson is the one who beat the broadest group of good fighters? Who says what is the criteria? Johnson gave his men a chance at least.

OK well to use Larry Holmes as an analogue:

I think that Jack Johnson beating Denver Ed Martin for the coloured heavyweight title is the equivalent of Holmes beating Greg Page while he was WBC champion and then giving him a rematch.

Beating Sam McVe is the equivalent of a prime Holmes dominating Tim Witherspoon at the stage of Witherpoon's career where he fought Holmes then doing it twice more for good measure.

Beating Frank Childs would be like a prime Holmes beating the version of Quai that George Foreman beat.

Sandy Ferguson could be compared to sombody like Oleg Maskaev in recent years and you have five wins over him.

These comparisons are approximate and do not take into acount differences between eras but they help put things into perspective.

and you are also not considering dehydration before fights.
archie moore had his annorectic habbit of chewing and spitting meat to make 175 and was also taller than marciano , remember his fighting weights at heavyweights , was he out of shape then? moore was bigger than marciano . maybe marciano was fatter in the street , but still smaller.

Archie Moore was not naturally bigger than Rocky Marciano! Moore actually began his professional career as a welterweight, and competed successfully all the way up to heavyweight. Rocky started his professional career as a heavyweight and was always a heavyweight. During his career Marciano walked around at about 210-215 pounds, and he was not fat at that weight!

What you have to consider about Marciano is that he effectivley har the training regime of a modern ultra runner going into a title fight. He would go out to the mountains and towards the end of his training camp he was purportedly putting in 16 miles of road work a day.

Now in the 24 hours before a fight his fluid levels and fat levels would have been verry low and he would have been effectivley recovering from an ultra marathon.

It is highly doubtfull whether he would have been able to sweat down 15 lbs and then recover it in this condition. He might have had to either cut back his training regime in order to dehydrate and that would raise the weight that he was dehydrating from.
