    The version of39 years old Bob Fitzsimmons that came out of two years retirement, weighing 172lbs to challenge 27 years old Jeffries, versus prime versions of ;
    Sonny Liston
    Joe Frazier
    Mike Tyson
    1902 Gloves 20rounds.
    What happens?

ps I picked those three because they were around Jeffries weight of 219 lbs for this contest albeit slightly lighter.

He would get murdered, Liston`s reached matched with his power would be too much, Frazier`s head movement was something Bob wouldn`t have seen before, Tyson was simply better than Bob and Jeffries, as for the 1902 gloves I suppose maybe they were like MMA gloves so that could make a difference, the game moved on from the early 90`s when the 60`s came along, Tyson benefited from the tapes he watched from that era of fighters like Patterson, just better training methods, for me Jack Johnson was ahead of his time and he would of stood a better chance than Bob, specifically since Fitz was 39, I feel if anyone was going to beat a prime Tyson they would have to be at their peak.

Ruby Rob KOs 'em all in 30 seconds.

In seriousness people talk about him being primitive, but they judge him by low quality footage of early in his fight with Corbett and maybe the last round against Lang. Add to it that Fitz-Corbett was a finish fight, they weren't trying to look good for the judges, which people often don't seem to grasp, modern fighters (if they were intelligent), would take a somewhat different approach to a finish fight.

Imagine judging Hopkins by a crappy copy of his fight with Roy Jones Jr (with out much footage of Roy Jones Jr), and the last round against Joe Smith Jr. On the other hand we have plenty of evidence of Fitz being an excellent boxer, such as his fights with Dempsey, Maher, Gardner. If we had footage of those, maybe people would have a different opinion on Fitz's skills.

Fitz was vulnerable to left jabs ,but a pin -point, precise puncher. My question ,which perhaps I could have worded more clearly, is, does he have anywhere the degree of success he had against Jeffries before his hands gave way and he had nothing left to keep the big fella off with?

No I don't see him having any degree of success against those 3 .
    Liston stops him in 1
Frazier ,a little bit of a slow starter kos him in 3.
Tyson not a slow starter kos him in 90 second s .
I respect Ruby for his achievements in his career but coming out of that Long a retirement ,and facing 3 of the most dangerous heavy s ,he's DOOMED.

If you slap a "heavyweight" label on the fight, the normal laws of physics are automatically suspended.

Between that and Fitz's fatality count being more than those three combined, I see no reason not to make the Ruby one a heavy favorite, both in boxing and blacksmithing. Let's see any of those modern rascals make the very skillet they cook their corn mush in. Then we'll talk.

We can only speculate really. I'll leave it to other people to answer though as I am aware of my own bias, I just want to get people to give it some thought before writing off Fitz.

We are talking about about someone with freakish power, who beat a lot of the best P4P fighters of his day, as well as many of the best heavyweights, the only time in his prime he was out boxed was against probably the fastest heavyweight champion ever, who's skills was admired by fighters at lower weights, and he still won.

Looking at reports he had very good offensive and defensive ability. In his fight with Dempsey, Fitz was offensive, and smashed Dempsey around the ring. I've heard people claim they didn't cut the ring off back then, yet in the Hall and Dempsey fights, Fitz gets them in the corner. In his first fight with Maher, Fitz totally wore him down with his defensive skills and jab, (I think he may have injured his right hand or something) barely being hit himself. Fitz aged 40, with injuries that hadn't properly healed, ill, and having to get his weight down, was still able to outbox a top Light Heavyweight over 20 rounds. The report I've seen often talks about Fitz using clever blocking, ducking and defensive skills.

Okay, you are making a real effort to be objective and I appreciate that !
ps I think Fitz was the best heavyweight before Johnson.

He could have beaten Frazier, who did not take a good punch, and would do better vs. Liston than say Patterson.

I do not think Fitzsimmons would have beaten Tyson, but if he can get though the early rounds if could be interesting.

I picked them because they approximated Jeffries size.
