This Division is pathetic. Sir Joe Calzaghe should come back and clean house.

I have become a fan of Ward and think he will go on to be an ATG. But as much as I dislike Calzaghe he was very formidable during his prime. If he came back now Ward would win as Calzaghe is 41 and has not fought in over 4 years.

Prime Calzaghe may overwhelm Ward on work rate alone. Unlike the Hopkins, Joe faced, Ward likes to fight in close due to his lack of reach and so Calzaghe would not have to chase him like he did Hopkins, which would allow Calzaghe to set the kind of pace that could push Ward to the brink.

Prime for prime it would be a close fight but at this point I just favour Calzaghe to win a very close fight. Ward is very smart and can make adjustments but Calzaghe has also shown he can change it up and is a complete fighter who can adapt and change tactics mid fight. But we may not have seen the best of Ward yet I think he has improved and become more consistent and focused in his last 2 fights.

The division is weak compared to how it was. Alot of proof to this is when you look at the current top 10.
    Consider -

Kessler when faded, injury prone and not active is the best win of both Ward and Froch, whilst Calzaghe beat prime undefeated Kessler, who when coming off a loss beat undefeated Froch.

Bika who Calzaghe clearly beat is still in the top 10 and now due a title shot and Bika doesnt fight that often.

G Johnson became a top 10 SMW recently and years ago was only a journeyman at the weight.
In order for Froch to fight Ward (the champ) he had to beat old boiled down G Johnson in an eliminator first, yet years previously Sheika had to beat prime Johnson to fight Calzaghe (the champ), which shows how the division has dipped.

G Groves a SMW that I rate highly, who is in the top 10 fought boiled down, faded, older Johnson recently and that was considered a good step up, yet years previously Johnson was being beaten when prime by Sheika.

Who has Oosthuizen beaten to be top 5 in this era? I like Oosthuizen but who did he beat?

Look at the top 10 and you have several names that have not done much, but are top 10 in this era

The division is not as strong as it was, but there are still good matches made, but you are right, if Calzaghe was around now, it would be considered very weak as he would have been so dominant. I dont think Calzaghe would have struggled with Froch like Ward did to get a close decision.
Its been over 5 years since Calzaghe fought in the SMW division, yet even now out of the 11 fighters listed in the ring mag SMW division, Calzaghe has more wins over current Ring mag top 10 fighters, than 9 of the 11 fighters listed, which tells you everything
