Other than both having success on the ropes I don't really see the similarities. Maidana was relentless throughout and maintained a high work rate. Tarver was a cautious counter puncher who picked his spots to attack, usually when Jones Jr was against the ropes. Had Tarver gone all out like Maidana, Roy would have KO'ed him, Jones Jr had power unlike Mayweather and would have caught him coming in.
exactly. And people were questioning if Jones had heart cuz they never seen him in a tough fight. Dude passed with flying colors. He had intangibles too
it's my favorite fight of his cuz he came through that adversity like a champ. I wish he'd retire already. Saw his last fight against that no name in Russia (I think). Man...he looked supremely sloppy.
So was i. I could not help but keep thinking the fight was playing out like jones/tarver 1 and now finding out the scores were identical is pretty eerie. If floyd is smart he will not fight Maidana again. Floyd saying he chose to stand and fight for the fans is complete bs! I think in training he realized he would not be able to move all 12 against a pressure fighter like Maidana. If you watch the fight there were times floyd tried to move but could not. it seems to me he did stay in front of maidana for about the first 6 rounds like he was conserving his energy but from 7 on he stayed on the move as much as possible and fought very well. Anytime Maidana came close he just clinched instead of trying to shoulder roll on the ropes and moving away like he usually does. his inability to do that last night was very concerning and a clear sign floyd is slowing down.
i thought the same thing watching this fight. except i had roy winning 8-4 watching live and after watching replay had him winning 7-5. i had floyd up 9-3 last night. decent fight but floyd was in control. both roy and floyd are victims of their own success. both decisions were booed by the crowd because they are used to seeing these guys win every minute of every round. one thing that is obvious is that floyd's legs aren't what they once were. if he gets in there with a more skilled pressure fighter, he will struggle. he's a brat outside of the ring but i'm enjoying watching the last few fights of his stellar career. he's not tbe but he sure is great.
Whitaker v. Hurtado was one similar too. Some greats you see their last in one night.(Except Joe C.):yep
