This is a Terrible era of boxing

Discussion in 'World Boxing Forum' started by Phill-Mitchell, Sep 22, 2012.

  1. I read a thread earlier.

In that thread, a bunch of posters were getting excited because Marcos Maidana had learned to throw a jab.

That, in a nutshell is boxing in 2012

We get excited about this guy Matthyse.

Can you IMAGINE Matthyse vs a Prime Roberto Duran?

It'd be over in two short rounds with matthyse leaving the ring comatose.

I mean seriously. Boxing has turned to ****. It's why guys like Broner get talked about. Guys like Arreola are going to be handed a world title.

Floyd mayweather is about the best we have, but he's nothing special in a historic context.

    Pathetic.

No, you're just unfortunate to see that there are a lot of terrible boxing fan's.

This era is holding up pretty well if you ask me.

    Yes and No.

It's like being in a really shitty relationship except the sex is good. I can't argue with the Floyd-Pac drama. It's truly embarrassing. It's like having the Superbowl or World Series canceled. There are other things to complain about but you pick and choose what you like and watch. That's all there is to it.

The biggest problem in boxing is the best not fighting the best enough. Also contenders fighting bums and waiting for title shots. But that is also fans fault because the more risk guys take the more L's they get and then they get called bums.

Also Lopez vs Gamboa situations. That fight should've been made right after Lopez fought Luevano and Gamboa fought Mtgawa. Instead greedy promoters wanna milk them indiviually and then get the big fight but most of the time **** never goes according to plan. And prospect rarely fight other top prospects.

For the most part, the lower weights are ok with me (besides the whole Pacquiao/Mayweather fiasco. It's the heavyweights which are crap.

I felt the same way in 1996. I didn't care about all the new talent coming up. I criticized them and their fans to no end.

10 years later I sat the F down and shut my mouth because almost every fighter I criticized went on to be ATGs/Future HoFers. Almost all of them won me over as a fan. I look at this talent pool right now, and I just can't agree with you.

nothing specuial. his defence is arguably the greatest ever and no one from the oldtimers had a career like pac, jumping like 8 divisions and beating everybody up. what are your excuses now, poor era. past prime morales and barrera, tell me

this era is great, except pussys like floyd not willing to make the biggest fights.

While I can understand your frustration at certain aspects of the sport I must generally disagree. There are too many fighters out there right now that excite me time and time again for me to start denegrating this era. Carl Froch as someone has mentioned might not be an all time great but he is a hard nosed entertaining brawler who will fight anyone at anytime. We have his conquerer andre ward whose mastery leads me to think he would match up favourably with any past fighter in and around his weight class. The super middleweight division as a whole has delivered, we have seen all the best matched against each other over the space of a couple years and we now have clarity.

We have sergio Martinez, super skilled and exciting to watch.

We have Marcos Maidana(and fair enough he is not perfect) but how can you not love the guy, he throws every shot with all he has and all he has ever had. He makes for exciting fights every time and will fights anyone.

We have bantams and super bantams willing to fight anyone and they are good to watch too.

And what of the emerging stars, how can one not be excited about the poise and punching power of ggg. The skills and mass appeal of canelo. The determination and ill intent of lucas matthysse.

To add to all this we have a good group of quality veterans like jmm and miguel cotto who you cant but appreciate.

Sure the pacquiao/mayweather fiasco is tiring but its hardly the first time in history that a big anticipated fight wasnt made. it happens.

Most importantly though it must be said that i believe we are on the cusp of a change. This change may fix those things that we can all agree are wrong with the sport. The ufc's success has been a catalyst and boxing is finally learning valuable lessons from this. In the last couple of months and in the months to come we are seeing quality matchups being made seemingly with relative ease. Last weekend we had a host of fine matchups on offer, we are getting mares/moreno, donaire/nishioka and rios alvarado in the next few weeks. And cards are becoming noticeably more stacked. Look at the New York card headlined by Garcia v Morales 2 and the past weekend as examples.

All in all what im saying is I love this sport and I love it for today just as much as I love it for yesterday. Heres to a great tomorrow.
