Fighters are always looked back at more fondly years later. Wait until 20 years time and people will be saying look at this guy he's no Mayweather!! People for get the bad things as time goes on and people are held in higher regard. Also with the internet we see more and more things Boxing related, more news, more video, more fights. Back then I assume you basically saw the fight and that was pretty much it. I also wondered what the reaction was back then to Duran quitting vs Leonard, can you ****ing imagine the reaction on here? "DURAN A ***** QUITTER!".
It is not, there are still good boxing, you bring up Duran but he did the same things guys do today "quit" so it is not as bad as people make it out to be.....If that happened in a major PPV match like Pac vs Floyd where one quit,so many fans would have been turned off.. You put exciting news is Maidana learning a jab? Not the Sergio or Ward victories, also great under cards.. Boxing fans are just spoiled brats we always gotta complain regardless.
Exactly thankfully the internet was not around,if his image was tarnished a little,it would be bum status by todays standards.. We always give a pass to the older generation... If people don't like boxing and it is boring there are other sports. In the 70's you also did not have MMA,yet another combat sport we are spoiled and don't even realize it..
Wholeheartedly agree mate, nostalgia is both powerful and distorted. These skewed perceptions give us inaccurate popular histories. The duran example is a perfect one.
Boxing has turned to **** because of *****rons like you shatting their pants whenever Floyd fights. Thats the only reason, no other.
Of course it's a terrible era. Look at the P4P list. the top 5 average out to be around 34/35 years old, mostly guys from the older era :-(
Ward & Martinez are considered exceptional P4P talents today but in the 80s wouldnt be anything special. Skill levels are clearly regressing, its obvious to anyone with eyes
I think the lower weight classes are about even in terms of ability, strength, speed etc, but yesteryears fighters almost definitely showed more heart and willingness to step up vs each other. Boxing has ALWAYS been a business, but it wasnt till recently that a couple Ls deemed a fighter a hypejob or a bum. When you look at the higher weight classes, 147+, it is horribly obvious that those guys are far superior in power compared to yesteryears fighters. Their technique is highly evolved and the amount of elites in the class seems to have grown as the business of boxing becomes more lucrative. IMO, since the late 60s, it seems, comparing tape and LOC, the fighters today would completely outclass the fighters pre 60s. However, heart would certainly come into play in many matchups.:deal
Yeah, is this how Boxing has gone? When the likes of Ricky Burns and Nathan Cleverly are "world champions"?
the politics and egos do get old at times. My focus tends to shift towards amatuers and up and coming fighters for the most part. The elite fighters are just puppets commanded by the evil promoters and motivated by money
