Honestly, you couldn't think less of the guy. He had the balls to move up two weight classes, winning the title at 160 and defending it with all opposition available. And I can't blame him for calling out smaller but name fighters as it will be his only chance at a decent payday that he realy needed. Hell, even Marvin Hagler called out Leonard and Hearns for the same reason. However, the problem is both the names he wanted, Floyd and Pac, are guy who may have maxed themselves out at 147. They just made a stop at 154 to further add titles under their belts and prove that they can beat guys who are significatly bigger than them. His only option is to either rule 160 until he quits or move up to 168. The difference between Sergio and Hagler is that back then, Haglers only choice to move up is at 175 where Michael Spinks is waiting for him. Of course he knew his limitations and he stayed at 160. Sergio has an option to try 168, the best option for him to get a payday and enchance his legacy by beating top names at 168. I won't say he'll be successful or he wail fail, but that's th only other option he has. Your thoughts?
I hear you man, fair post :good However, I think Martinez has shown (by both Pavlik and Barker, being natural middles, being considerably bigger then him in the ring) that 160 is his cieling. So instead of his options being, rule 160 or go to 168. I see it more as, rule 160, or move back down to 154 for fights against guys like Cotto, Canelo, ect. Also, the other thing Id say is that you said that Mayweather has just made a stop at 154. However, should he fight canelo after cotto, its fair to say that his time at 154 is more then just a stop, and should sergio move back down to jrmiddle, that fight is as fair as any fight, with Mayweather having fought Oscar, Cotto, and Canelo at the weight by then (all hypothetical at this point obviously) just imo though and I see what your saying.
Nice to hear from you buddy. That's a valid argument as well. Floyd has a lot of options at 154 if he wins. Although if he really does insist on a Pac fight, me might see him back at 147. As for Sergio, yeah his options for Pac might be a catchweight of 150 and for Floyd is a 154 contest down the road. The issue on this case would be if Sergio already has a full body of a middleweight and moving down would drain him.
thats realy the biggest mistake he could do right now. 1. 168 top boxers are much taller and way to big for him. like abraham he would get picked appart, because he might have the skills, bt is physicly just way to small and his arm length...zzzzZZZhhhhh 2. ward and kessler are no big money paydays!!! what he should do, is wait for the winner of cotto-mayweather and go down and challenge. or get easy money, easy wins in fighting chavez jr. or sturm. down the line a big bout with canelo (if he beats mosley) would be very interesting
Not sure Barker is actually considerably bigger in the ring, Martinez weighs between 165lb and 170lbs when in the ring and Barker about the same.
Hmm.... id def want to see an in ring weight for barker to believe he only weighs 165 to 170 on fight night. In the ring he looked considerably larger then Martinez to me, and it showed in the fight as well imo, which is the only reason he was actually able to somewhat trouble martinez. just imo though. But ya, if hes not heavier then 165 or so during the fight then hes not as big as I thought.
