    Close, but no cigar.

I could see an argument for having him at #3.

Who is the greatest heavyweight champion for their time and for their rule and impact, not head to head:

1 Joe Louis, no one else even close
    2.Jack Dempsey
    3. John L.Sullivan, he was a hero before media
    4. Rocky Marciano
    5. Mike Tyson
    6. Sonny Liston, viewed as unbeatable
    7. George Foremen see above
    8. Jack Johnson
    9. Larry Holmes
    10. Jim Jeffries

[Ali was very close, if not better]

He was not alive in an era without media. He is the definition of a media creation, in an era of no film or radio, so people only had the written word to know about him, unless they were in the lucky few who saw him fight

A Heavyweight merely being viewed as unbeaten is not a good enough reason to be rated the sixth best

See above, just changing sixth to seventh. There is a strong argument for Foreman being a top seven Heavyweight, but the 'unbeatable monster' is a mere plank of the argument

You should probably throw in Tom Cribb, assuming that bare knuckle is acceptable.

George Foreman has quoted Louis as the #1 on MANY occasions, so, irrelevant.

Lewis has no argument for GOAT status. I've never heard any historians claim him as the greatest, he's most commonly placed at top 3, though he doesn't have a great claim over guys like Foreman and Marciano IMO.

What has Lewis done to deserve this title? Beat Holy and Tyson past their prime? Lose to Rahmin and McCall? Get a robbery over past prime Mercer?

Lewis has no claim over Louis and Ali, and a poor claim over Marciano, Foreman, and even Holmes

I have him at #3 but there is a better argument for #1 than there is for, say, #8.

Lewis was a formidable heavyweight but he was knocked-out twice and arguably lost to Mercer and Holyfield (II).

it's time we STOPPED this 'unequal, inaccurate' comparing...

we DON'T compare WELTERWEIGHTS to Light-heavyweights and say they are great Light-heavyweights... 2 DIFFERENT Animals.

he, Lennox Lewis IS a SUPER Heavyweight and should ONLY be compared with them, just because we call it the HW division, doesn't mean that it is.

the division has Jumped into the arena of GIANTS and LL and other S-HW should ONLY be compared to each other; i.e Fighters Over 6'5.

fighters under that we can be thought of as Heavyweights.

    Fair is Fair!!!

and on that note Lennox Lewis is arguably the greatest Super-Heavyweight.

this also allows for the P4P type discussions, like a Prime Joe Louis the HW in an ALL things Equal fight (that is what P4P is), BLOWS Lennox Lewis the SUPER Heavyweight away.

The greatest HW of all time can't be someone who displayed a China chin on two separate occasions to lose his title to midling talents.

    The greatest does the improbable.

Someone who can't do the probable is not the Greatest.

Ali did the improbable when he kod Liston and Foreman. Both were regarded by experts as being unbeatable at the time Ali fought them.

    It's Ali in my book.
