http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=fuX7FlddCRg There is no way, Ali allows another boxer or the public to think anybody is a better fighter than him. He didn't pull the Mayweather and Pac move by avoiding each other and other tough opponents!!! THIS VIDEO IS FUNNY AS HELL!!
Wtf I literally just watched this full video for the first time and you just posted it Tyson says it best: "Ali was a monster - never threw a bodypunch in his life" Which is true! You never really think of Ali as a monster - I just think of finess in the ring You'd expect Ali to be the technician but really he was just an animal! Iron jaw http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=MF17mkqyf44
Disagree Ali was overrated. Great boxer, not the greatest. Only thing is he said he was the greatest so often and so loudly that simple-minded fools believed it. Greatest ever... no chance. Not even greatest ever heavyweight.
I've barely seen any boxing fans who call him the greatest fighter ever. Most people go for Sugar Ray Robinson. Hell, Ali himself said it was Robinson. I do think you can make a very solid case for him being the greatest heavyweight, though.
SRR or Marciano would be my #1. It all depends on what you mean by greatest. If by greatest you mean he would have beat the top heavyweights in every era... then nope. Wlad Klitschko could have beat him, Ali struggled against bigger guys. I'm not saying Wlad is the best of all time, just that he could have beat Ali. I'd also pick prime Lennox Lewis and prime Mike Tyson to be able to beat a prime Ali.
1. Ray Robinson 2. Sam Langford 3. Harry Greb 4. Henry Armstrong 5. Ezzard Charles 6. Roberto Duran 7. Willie Pep 8. Muhammad Ali 9. Benny Leonard 10. Mickey Walker The most difficult thing is finding an order for Langford, Greb and Armstrong who are all locked-in for a top four ranking.
He was fortunate to live in a very "special" time in human history of which he became part of. I agree he was over-rated.
Great list! It isn't exactly like mine, but I can't argue with yours. It is nice to see Harry Greb in the top three. Sugar Ray Leonard and Willie Pep are in my top ten.
An understatement if I ever saw one. "People think Ali is the greatest because he said it so much". What a load of cobblers. No, people say Ali is the greatest Heavyweight on account of the ability he demonstrated on film in beating such men as Sonny Liston, Floyd Patterson, Joe Frazier, George Foreman, and a whole host of strong contenders who would easily be belt holders today. Joe Louis was great, Ali was greater.
Ali wasn't the greatest. He was great, not the greatest. Maybe even the greatest of his generation. In this generation, Lewis and Tyson could have beat him and both Klitschko's definitely would have. I judge the greatest by comparing them to boxers of past generations. Ali wouldn't be able to beat the four I mentioned so how can he be the greatest? He always struggled against guys bigger than him and so wouldn't stand a chance against either of the Klitschokos. They'd just keep jabbing away at Ali, he wouldn't get close to them and they'd pick up the UD. Lewis and Tyson both had the power to finish Ali off. Possibly the greatest of his generation. Not the greatest heavyweight of all time. End of story. How can he be the greatest of all time when two boxers from the 90s and two from 2000's could beat him in his prime?
I agree, once he proclaimed it we all accepted it,and anyone saying he is #2,3,4 or 5 are shut down as insane and not real boxing fans.. If he did not promote himself the way he did,we would not be scoffed at if we said he is not number one, even if we put him as #2,3 etc.
