But will they still be the premiere boxing promotion like they were shaping up to be thanks to Schaefer?:think
You're presupposing that Haymon will work with Mayweather after Floyd retires. Will Mayweather's name recognition be valuable enough once he hangs them up to promotional efforts? I'm honestly asking. Mike Tyson has built himself into a brand but he was the HW champion when that still meant something and was seen as an 'exciting fighter'. The thing with Mayweather is that people sort of hate him -- he's even said as much himself. People who dislike him will tune into his PPVs to watch him lose, but would they turn up to his promotions if they hate him?
It looks like GBP did not lose their biggest market which is the Mexican and Mexican American market. They have a bunch of young prospects, he has several projects he is currently working on, inclduing something with Fernando Vargas, possibly Joel Casamayor too. He gets former fighters involved and I believe out of all the promotional companies GBP continues to be the most ethical, continuosly making the best fights possible and empowering the fighters.
Doesn't make sense for Haymon to distance himself from mayweather. Hate him or love him, having the richest boxer in the game who fought for the biggest purses in his era telling young fighters about the benefits of having Al Haymon manage their career like he did his is as powerful a marketing tool. These young'uns WANT to be in Floyd's position.
He also just gave up LSC which was more about LSC just going along with Haymon about not wanting to fight Rigo. Oscar doesn't want cowards.
I don't think Haymon will necessarily distance himself from Mayweather, but I think once Mayweather retires that he and Haymon won't have a whole lot in common. I also don't know if Floyd would be comfortable being a spokesman/recruiter for Haymon Promotions (whatever he's calling it). For one thing that relegates Floyd to the position of cheerleader and his ego is massive enough that he probably won't like that. I think Mayweather will try and promote his own shows but the fans that hate him won't show up to see his fighters fight -- unless of course it's a good matchup -- like they show up to watch him get beaten. Part of Mays success is built on the animosity he fostered with the public and I don't think that will translate to a post-boxing career all that well.
There is no Haymon Promotions right? He still isn't technically a promoter. As an advisor, Haymon still needs to have a promotional company put these fights on doesn't he?
I honestly don't know what you can call him at this point. He seems to be putting on shows which sounds like a promoter...but maybe he's just 'advising' his clients to fight on said shows/networks.
Oscar, Canelo and their "We're taking May 5 back!" sounds like Smoky talking about Deebo. OSCAR: Floyd be like, "Shut the **** up." I be quiet. But when he leave...I be talkin' again.
