There has been debate about why UFC should be contested in an octagon and not a ring. In some countries the octagon has even been a stumbling block with local authorities for approval of MMA. It was in Australia for a while. But as you'll see in this fight. Ironically a boxing match. There is a genuine need for the octagon -: [ame]http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=bH4nDLNLfk0[/ame]
Its an old arguement. I personally like the ring, gives legitamcy and class to the fights but practically speaking the cage it is. I don't really like people using the cage to stand back up or hold a guy against but whatever, it works better at holding the fighters inside it and not getting tangled in the ropes.
Love MMA in a cage when I watch on tv Love it in a ring when I go to a live event Much easier to see the action
Still is. As far as I'm aware "cagefighting" is still illegal in Victoria. Also, there's this: This content is protected ...and this: [ame]http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Pp9vnS61aD0[/ame]
Well I enjoyed the more action packed M1 event thats in the ring and also enjoyed the old Pride fights in the ring than the dry hump fest and lay and stall that they have in the UFC cage Didnt someone die in an MMA cage as well?
...did you read his post...? "blah blah, M-1, blah blah Pride, someone died in a cage" Hundreds of people have died in the ring (I don't think the ring/cage has anything to do with that, so I don't even know why he brought it up), let alone the injuries sustained getting caught in the ropes or falling straight through them. From memory only two people have ever fallen out of a cage (that I've seen, anyway).
I don't think morono is a complete idiot. I just don't care for the way he arrives at his opinions. I have not set out with the goal of proving what promotion is better. I don't care all that much. I care more about fighters' individual achievements, and who they've proven themselves against. Morono likes to take the position that things were better with any organization other than the UFC, and argues that anything they do is better than the way the UFC does. I'm quite sure if PRIDE used a cage, and the UFC used a ring, that the cage would be better in morono's mind. I believe that PRIDE had the better stable at one time, but all of those fighters have aged at this point. While PRIDE had better fighters, they were also more corrupt. I'm not talking about organized crime connections, I'm talking about the fights. There were many a fixed fight in PRIDE. I can't say the same for the UFC. I sure as hell don't think M1 Global has taken over as the premier organization either.
IMO The ring sets up too many dangerous situations in MMA. This content is protected This content is protected This content is protected This content is protected
Unfortunately many people have died in boxing rings over the years too. But statistics have been compiled before that show boxing less risky than many other sports. The same would apply to MMA.
