It might not do bigger numbers in the US than Hatton-Mayweather, or Pacquiao-De La Hoya, but worlwide it could well surpass them. It's amazing though that it does get on CNN, when it doesn't even feature a US fighter. It's been on the BBC News channel as well, and The Today Programme on Radio 4! Someone on that said that Imelda Marcos reckons Pacquiao can be president of the Phillipines one day...
trinidad-hopkins is the biggest fight this decade...the winner of that fight is automatic top 50 ATG...
Hatton vs Floyd was WAY bigger than this one. People were talking about it in pubs, clubs, supermarkets and at the bus stop..... for weeks beforehand. For this one, there is the occasional chat in a pub or amongst groups of friends. From the last ten years..... these are (in my opinion) the most talked about fights involving British fighters - in order of course...... 1. Lewis-Tyson 2. Hatton-Mayweather 3. Lewis-Holyfield I 4. Lewis-Holyfield II (either of these can be swapped around) 5. Hatton-Tszyu 6. Calzaghe-Kessler 7. Calzaghe-Lacy 8. Williams-Tyson 9. Haye-Maccarinelli 10. Lewis-Klitschko Hatton-Pac would probably just get into the top 5 at a push....
didn't know that the thread is about promotional aspect...indeed this fight is right up there with lewis-tyson in terms of promotion
The thing about this one is that it's a big fight that has every chance of delivering, which is better for boxing than a fight that gets the attention, then has average action on the night, which doesn't attract the casuals back. If this fight is a classic, then a rematch could be huge money.
Hatton vs Mayweather was a far bigger event. It didn't need promoting really. Brash, black American vs down to earth white Englishman = big sell regardless. Filipino with broken English vs deluded Englishman = decent sell, in need of promotion. I say deluded - all this P4P talk is getting on my nerves. If he had beaten Mayweather, yeah sure he would have been #1. But given that he didn't, and other people such as Marquez have done great things since, all a win here would prove is that Hatton is better than Pacquiao at 140 - not P4P. In fact, depending on the manner of a Hatton victory (if it happens) you could have Pac above Hatton..... just a thought.
I'm not talking about PPVs yet or gate receipts for lack of data yet. I'm talking how this fight was promoted and hyped. It should rivalled any the Ali-Frazier fights. Pacquiao must have become more and more popular after dela Hoya's era.
I honestly don't think that this fight is that huge, you have to remember before all of the extensive ppv and internet stuff, there were some gigantic events, numbers dont always tell the story , if you are looking at proper human interest and high octaine anticipation, look back at your Tyson v Spinks, Holmes v Cooney, Leonard v Hearns, Hagler v Hearns, Lewis v Tyson.. Hatton v Mayweather was imo larger than this one... even for figures...
Hatton - Mayweather was way bigger for us brits as some one said every one was talking about it & god knows how many Brits were there for that fight. But diff with Pacman - Hatton is that as all the promotions keep saying both fighters have huge followings unlike Mayweather who even the Americans werent that bothered about watching v Hatton.
CNN 99% o the time reports all kinds of cricket and football games so yeah when CNN reports about boxing, then you know that it is a huge boxing event. When was the last time that gay of a network ever talked about boxing? Wasn't it Lewis-Holyfield 1?
