This newspaper suggests that the claims that Smith put Johnson partly through the ropes/knocked him down , in a spar, were just a stunt to garner publicity for Smith.A stunt with which Johnson went along.

It also claims that Johnson was primarily responsible for launching Smith's subsequent career

Before we give too much credence to this, we should be aware this was published in 1914 , 4 years after the incident happened.
I put up the link for those few that might be interested ,and have an open mind on its contents.

It's the first and second columns .

We know you have learning difficulties, so I'll explain the post for you, this NAMED SOURCE,[ notice that?] Contends that the kd was a publicity stunt with which Johnson went along.

The source you provided a while back was an unattributed source.

I have said I have an open mind on the incident.

Something that is completely alien to yourself .

Ready to answer those questions now?

Or are you going to run away again?

Rather a habit with you isn't it?

You're a moron with anything but an open mind when it comes to your wife beating idol. You will try to shoot down any other source that doesn't jive, and quickly embrace crap if it excuses Johnson from one of his numerous dubious results. Keep making excuses, and be careful not to quote " In this corner " because in the book Smith said Johnson never forgot that punch.

Sure--Johnson who was an egomaniac would take a dive and soil his image as champion. Brilliant suggestion! Also if Johnson was in on fixes, then do you have an open mind that some fights were fixed for him to win? I doubt it! What's next? The fake Dempsey vs. Johnson report from Canada?

I've embraced nothing ,I just posted a link to a source that states the spar was a stunt. I have given no opinion on it whatsoever.
When I first posted the interview with Smith ,yes it was me . I said it was a taped interview from 1972, you responded "well Smith would say he didn't tko Johnson, because Johnson was his employer and he would not, "bite the hand that feeds him". Considering Johnson and Smith sparred in 1910 and the interview was in 1972, 62 years later ,and that Johnson had been dead since 1946, some 26 years earlier.I found this absolutely hilarious. You are not capable of rational thought, but it is fun to pull your chain now and then.

Yeah, let's be honest, a lot of the boxing business back in those days was built on newspaper publicity.
And the relationships between the boxing writers and the managers/promoters of fighters involved the spinning of yarns and interesting tales to raise a man's profile.

Either way, it's a sparring session.

A year or so back there were reports that thompson dropped haye in sparring, spadafora beat up floyd in sparring, ortiz battered de la hoya in sparring etc etc.

surely it doesn't need to be explicitly spelled out that sparring is just......sparring.

No matter how many times you reiterate just that, Mendoza will still say it was a tko for Smith.

I think he must just be trolling when he uses a sparring session as some sort of degenerate towards johnson's legacy.

Mendoza is neither intelligent , nor ironical enough to troll ,he believes what he posts. He wants it to be true so badly, that he convinces himself , if no -one else.

How could he believe a sparring session should be held against a great fighter?

I love it when you contradict yourself, as you have said many times I am a good poster outside of this topic. You must have the memory of a goldfish these days.

What is true is when Smith landed a good one on Johnson, he went down, and got up dazed to the point where Johnson's manager had to stop things inside of 4 rounds. I have posted the report here many times. One more time so you can read it:

    http://query.nytimes.com/mem/archive-free/pdf?res=9F0DEED61F31E733A25751C1A9669D946897D6CF

Smith was accomplished for a while, and deserved a real title shot. Johnson never gave one, and I think this 4 round whatever you wish to call it shows Smith could have won by knock out.
