Are you saying that the guy who sat on the board of the Nevada State Athletic Commission which refused SEG a licence to run UFC events in Nevada which basically killed the Company then bought the UFC for a pittance a few months down the line is corrupt Scurla?
Ummmm....... yes. That's what I said. I don't like the way the UFC allows them. They slice a guy's forehead wide open far too easily. :good Mainstream in Japan, sure, maybe. But for a sport that was in the mainstream, Japanese MMA sure seems to have pretty much died incredibly quickly after PRIDE folded. I mean, the state of it now is pretty poor. :conf And anyway, we're not in Japan, we're in the West. And in the West, MMA has more visibility and a higher profile than ever before, thanks to the UFC's efforts to create a legitimate, regulated, sanctioned sport. :good I don't see any earpieces on Herb Dean. :yep :good :hat
Yeah I think so. You cant doubt the integrity of a guy who's main income is gambling sitting on the board of a sports commission. Next you will be telling me that the only reason Frank and Lorenzo got involved in Station was because their Dad was refused a licence for being involved in the notorious Mafia skimming operation featured in the film Casino. They are honest because they dont wear ear pieces (no Sonnen) Did you enjoy Pac v Timmeh?
Too easy... And when all else fails buy the commissioners. The fight was so so. I'm just not a fan of Bradley at all. He's horrible to watch and so negative. Plus the decision was a joke. Although i told my mate to put some money on Bradley to win a UD and he won some money at the bookies so he was pleased. :yep
Japanese MMA had its roots in the UFC? Pride was not a product of the ufc. Its roots are based in Japanese pro wrestling, Shooto, Pancrase and RINGS. Note the ring as opposed to cage, and the rules. though the ufc did have its influence, PRIDE probably would have existed without them. it was back in 1997 Pride Fc was created, the ufc wasnt even the same org then. Remember the ufc we see today is not the same at all as the ufc that Rorian created. it has rules and weight classes and the participants are more the athlete type than the streetfighters and Martal Arts traditionalist. The UFC has evolved to develop its fanbase. Japanese MMA has evolved along a different path for its very different fanbase. One of the things I used to really liked about MMA was its diversity, Pride rules, Ufc rules, vale tudo rules ect… Now we have just one; ultimate fighting. An example of this is strikeforce. Remember just a year ago when Strikeforce didn’t allow elbows to a grounded opponent. I liked that, because I think without elbows it allows for more creative and challenging gnp and conversely opportunities for submissions, sweeps form the bottom. Also without the cuts and slippery bloody borefests( I often find them boring) that can result.
Your not wrong in what you are saying Yaca, but it's fair to say that with out the UFC we may not have had PRIDE. Glance at the early cards, Severn, Coleman, Kerr, Wanderlei, Oleg, Kimo, Ruas, even Yarborough were all big parts of the show.
Yaca, that was mostly meant to get a rise out of morono; but there was a little bit of truth to it. The UFC was not a Zuffa invention. The UFC was created, by Rorion Gracie, for the sole purpose of show casing Gracie Jiu Jitsu on a large stage. It worked, and BJJ burst onto the world scene. Shortly after Royce's rise in popularity, it became known that he wasn't even considered the best practitioner in his family. Rickson was considered to be the best fighter in the family. An event featuring Rickson was done in Japan, and PRIDE FC has its roots in that event. So one can make the argument no UFC, no fame for Royce. Rickson remains unknown in the martial arts world, and no one ever has him fight in Japan. If Rickson doesn't make his way to Japan, PRIDE never happens. None of that has anything to do with Zuffa, but I don't really care about that. Again, I just wanted to **** with morono.
i watche dthe ufc the other night with a mate, stayed up until 2 am to watch and teh product was garbage in all fairness, my mate is a newbie to mma and i thought i could get him hooked but boy was i wrong, at the end of it he was telling me to turn on something else during teh main event, there is too much bull**** on these days and in a few years the **** will really have hit the fan for zuffa, they have really ****ed things up through their own greed
Its a niche sport and always will be. Personally I have found the UFC have just oversaturated the market. Far too many shows when they dont have enough quality of fighters to sustain these shows. I still watch some fights but cannot remember the last time I watched a ppv show in full as I'm bored with it now. I would never go to those UK shows live either as they are just b-list fighters at best.
Thats a bit debatable. As if there was no Takada vs Rickson there would have been no PRIDE. The first event alone attracted circa 49,000 fans or so. Those fighters you mentioned all left for PRIDE because that's where the big money was. Either way PRIDE had many home grown stars of a world class calibre.
The Rickson fight was the icing on the cake no doubt, but my point still stands. The 1st 5 or 6 events had former UFC guys in big fights Off the top of my head you can only really call Igor, Shoji, Takada and Saku home grow stars, and Igor and Sakuraba both made their names by beating Newton and Vitor and winning UFC Japan and Igor got famous for his fight with Kerr. Maybe PRIDE would have happened with out the UFC, but there'd be a much smaller talent pool to use to make the home grown guys famous. But it was the GP that really put PRIDE on the map, Royce played a big part in that, and coleman and kerr as well
Very true. Igor and Kerr were seen as the number 1 heavys at the time. Although Sakuraba was the star for me. Still shocks me to think i sat through an hour and a half of that one fight and wasn't bored.
I watched the whole GP a while back, still timeless Colemans celebration is one of my favourite MMA moments ever This content is protected
