People were wondering during the post-fight press conference why Ortiz seemed to jovial. But really, isn't this the best thing that could have happened to him short of winning? Consider: 1. It was clear Mayweather was eventually going to win. If he eventually seized control of the fight and beat Ortiz down until the 10th, 11th or 12th round, the enduring memory of Ortiz would have been that he was in over his head. Instead, the memory the public has is of a guy who was holding his own, winning the 2nd round and was in the midst of a very good moment in the 4th before he threw the headbutt. To the average eye, Ortiz was on the verge of being even with Floyd after four rounds. 2. Ortiz has public sympathy and goodwill. There was a collective "awww" coming from a lot of corners of the non-boxing public. People all over Twitter and Facebook, from celebrities to regular joes were solidly on Ortiz' side. He's a household name because of what happened. In some respects, he became the new Golden Boy DLH was hoping Ortiz would become. His marketability has skyrocketed. 3. He's won the event. Ortiz will likely make as much or more in his next fight than he did in this fight. By not clearly losing the fight, there's still the open question of "how good is this guy?" and "what would have happened if not for dirty Floyd?" in the mind of the non-boxing public. Make no mistake that Ortiz' next fight will probably be on PPV and will generate VERY good numbers. 4. He'll be first in line to fight Pacquiao or Floyd. To those with a boxing eye, it was clear Ortiz was not going to win the fight. In fact, he showed a vulnerability to Floyd's power even before then that suggests Floyd would have gotten the stoppage at some point. Pacquiao and his team know that. If the Floyd fight doesn't come through, Pacquiao would go after Ortiz instead and give him a "proper shot" at a title. All said, Ortiz should be pretty thankful about what happened last night. The alternative would not have been kind to him.
Boxing fans realize Ortiz ****ed himself up. As such, they're not happy with the dumb ****, they were expecting to see a fight, and what they saw was a moron not protecting himself like he should have done, who got KO'd by a sucker punch... That fight was not done, Ortiz still had a shot. Boxing fans were robbed of the end of the bout. What they saw was some cheap ****, a sucker punch ending the night... Gay. Ortiz is a dumb ****, I wouldn't pay a cent to see his next fight. Stupid moron isn't any better than Nate Campbell... He threw away his biggest fight and robbed boxing fans who paid to watch this crap.
It's not the boxing fans I'm referring to, though. Boxing fans don't make fighters rich and famous. It's the non-boxing community who are the real king-makers. In boxing circles, it's about 70% in favor of what Mayweather did and 30% against, but in the much larger general public, it's about 80% in favor of Ortiz. Those six or seven replays in slow motion of Ortiz hugging Mayweather, and Mayweather cracking him while he was looking away didn't help. And Merchant basically stealing the show when Mayweather tried to intimidate him pretty much sealed it. In the mind of the non-boxing public, Mayweather came away with a big event loss. But Ortiz is now quite possibly the third most recognizable name and face in boxing. That "sucker punch" just made Ortiz a superstar.
He got knocked the **** out and it was hilarious. Almost as funny as a circus clown being eaten by an elephant. Victor Ortiz is the boxing equivalent of a circus clown. A crazy, crazy circus clown.
dunno... taking his previous fight history along with what happened last night, I'm left thinking he's mentally weak, dumb and a quitter. I doubt he'll land on another ppv card for a long time.
Because of the ambiguity of the loss, whomever Ortiz fights next is going to be a BIG fight for BIG money. I'd be shocked if he fought anybody other than: Pacquiao Khan Mayweather And, if none of those fights can be made because May and Pac fight each other and Khan is occupied with Peterson, then Berto. Aaaaaand...once again Bradley will be left out in the cold, lol. He'll end up fighting Malignaggi or something.
