Not that the fights were absolutely spectacular, but De La Hoya REALLY stretched it with the way they put that **** together on Showtime. From the former Strikeforce guy on set To Paulie Malignaggi dropping knowledgeable fight calls (whether you like him or not, hes a smart kid that knows his boxing) To the lights, music and "special effects" To the 100,000 prize for the fighters that score the best KO, giving them an incentive to fight their asses off. (a page from dana white) Basically the card just "tasted" different. It was just different chemistry than what we are used to IMO. This was really a step in the right direction. No really it was. I'm not trying to exaggerate these things, but its a STEP in the right direction. Future cards following this formula will be successful. Sorry if there was a thread made on this already. PS....Maidana stole the show =) :good
You can't cover up the stench of the main event. Lopez weighed in at 144 against Ortiz. Canelo/GBP were cowards to make that fight. COWARDS.
^ I agree that it was another bogus opponent for Canelo. However, I'm speaking with that aside... Had it been against a legitimate opponent, it would have been something truly special. But thats all relative isn't it? I'm speaking best GBP card. Not Best card in general lol. Again, GBP has not done anything super amazing. Quality of fights/fighters aside. The money he pumped into the "show" involved with the promotion was IMO the BEST they've ever done. Its definitely a step in the right direction, if you pair it up with legitimate fights I think that it would be amazing for boxing in general.
I have computer problems so I haven't been able to do a few things so I haven't seen the overall card. I get your point about the overall show but I still choke on the main event. Oscar did an interview stating that Canelo is willing to take on all comers and named a few guys that were available for this fight that they passed on so I'm still in 'hate mode' over that. I guess he learned well from Arum in that respect.:-(
