This Weekend's Boxing Review

Loved this weekend's boxing Thought it would be worth a thread for people to post their thoughts on the weekend in general :good


Sturm v Murray - Scored it to Sturm 116-113. Impressed by Murray though he didn't put enough power in his punches. Sturm was boring and infuriating to watch again.

Place v Williams - Good upset win for Steve Williams. I thought Karl Place had looked decent when I've seen him before but apparently a few problems outside of the ring. Thought it was a poor stoppage but Williams was well on top anyway.

Arron v Rose - Fair play Brian Rose and those that called the upset. Rose boxed really well, keeping that high guard and just countering Arron's jab with ease. I scored it 118-110. A split decision was a joke.

Povetkin v Boswell - Only saw the finish. I rate Povetkin pretty highly and it's smart that they're keeping him away from Klitschko. Although **** him being the champion of anything. His matchmaking is a **** take.

Helenius v Chisora - Tempted to put Del's name first there such was how one sided the fight was. Chisora still lacks power and with better conditioning he would've stopped Robert Helenius. Scored it 119-109 Chisora so no need to mention it being a robbery. The 115-113 card for Del was bad enough in itself. Pathetic stuff.

Jones v Lujan - Jones is poor. Lujan not much more than a journeymen didn't win many rounds but it's just disappointing that Mike Jones wasn't able to really impress after controlling most of the fight. 118-110 on my card.

Wolak v Rodriguez - Unfortunately nowhere near as good as the first fight mainly because Wolak just wasn't effective enough. His high punch output wasn't quite there and Delvin Rodriguez measured the range and picked him off with ease come the end. Could've been stopped in the last round. I had it 97-93 overall.

Rios v Murray - Big praise to John Murray and Joe Gallagher for getting him prepared here. He won a few of the early rounds but his lack of power cost him at times as well as his face not being able to hold up to the damage from Rios. Was hard to watch at the end and Rios certainly needs to move up. I think he can compete with anyone in the 140 lb division but can he beat the likes of Khan, Bradley or Guerrero? I'd doubt it right now.

Cotto v Margarito - Well let's be fair, Cotto bossed it. The eye clearly wasn't healed and was pretty much completely closed within 3 or 4 rounds. There was always the worry that Cotto would wilt again but he boxed really smart, looked quicker on his feet than in the first fight and is still pretty much near his best IMO. Margarito must've been a nightmare to fight with the way he kept stalking forward, mocking Cotto's attacks throughout. Tony's finished now though, no way that eye gets passed medically fit any time soon.

Moreno v Darchinyan - First time I've seen Moreno and he certainly impressed. As Vic said post fight, he just couldn't catch him all night. Chemito was quick on his feet, kept that awkward southpaw stance and just countered Darchinyan throughout. Good stuff, scored it 117-110.

Mares v Agbeko - Massive credit to Abner Mares. The cut wasn't as much of a problem as it looked, but he still deserves praise for coming through the way he did. He continued with some good body shots and didn't stray low very often. I think he just beat Joseph Agbeko to the punch in most of the exchanges. I scored it 115-113 to Mares come the end and thought he thoroughly deserved the decision.
