This wilder situation

Wilder is a strange case.
He's easy to beat (in theory) but very hard to not lose to.
He has amateur skills (footwork & defence) but has elite timing and ATG power. Meaning almost every fight he's in is competitive.

It makes gripping viewing.

 

I would have loved to have seen a prime Big George fight Wilder. George could take a hellacious punch, shake it off and then KO his opponent. He would have put a big hurt on Wilder. This has to be the weakest crop of HWs in recent memory.

 

And this is the truth. The current HW scene blows balls.

 

The current heavyweight scene didn’t suck until AJ got beat up by a fat Mexican and it started to look like Wilder might just end up as undisputed champion. Now it’s the worst division ever.

 

Lol somebody finally said it.. Before that it was godly what AJ was doing until and supposed soft touch demolished him.. All HWs outside of Ali and Joe Louis were seriously flawed..

 

Far better than the Klitschko era. They had the weakest competition that I can recall. No Hall of Famers but themselves.

 

I think what bothers many is the fact that those at the top have been unwilling to take much risk. In prior eras, HWs would take all comers, which meant a variety of talents would have clashed. Today most of the HWs are careful in selecting who they will fight. Money has overtaken the sport, which is understandable from the fighter's perspective but it can make for boring mismatches. Why do people tune into boxing? Because they want to see an Andy Ruiz take down an Anthoney Joshua. The theater of the unexpected. Today it is all too predictable, on the whole.

 

The HW division is the best it's been in a long time. Because it is entertaining.

Yes, all the top guys are very flawed, but I'm enjoying this far more than "big" fights like Wladimir vs Haye. Or Lewis vs Tyson. I'm not sure what people love about those eras.

 

Bad example. Mayorga had skill.

 

It’s all down to platform wars. AJ was with DAZN and neither Wilder nor Fury wanted to be tied down to that ... and every offer included being a DAZN fighter.

Then Fury signed up with ESPN so that limited his options.

Wilder wants to be a free agent and take the big fights on his terms with FOX/Showtime.

It should sort itself out relatively soon. If Ruiz wins, he can unify with the Wilder/Fury II winner since he won’t be tied down to DAZN. If AJ wins, he’s no longer exclusive to DAZN ... if he wins and resigns with DAZN, he’s as much as saying he wants no part.

 

I'll take a Tyson-Holyfield, Holyfield-Bowe fight any day over any fight you can put together today.

 

Well there’s a total of five of those you can find on YouTube and discuss all day and night on classic.

Yet I don’t see you doing that. So I guess while you say you’d take that, you haven’t.

 

You're missing the point. I've seen them. I don't need to rewatch them or discuss them. My point was, in response to this being such a great time for HWs, I prefer other eras to this one.

 

Wilder is good for boxing. No shadow of a doubt.

If it was me, would I swap being overly skilled for being overly powered ? Hell yes.

Every era gets slagged off by the past. The Heavyweight scene is exciting right now and a Wilder v Joshua, Joshua v Fury fight would be as big as any in the past.
