As I watched the Kessler-Calzaghe fight I kept telling myself " Wow I'm watching one of the all time greats". I had never thought this before when watching any of his other fights, granted a was pretty drunk at the time, but I stand by my word after watching it again. I'm an American and I agree, I think Joe C needs to get his props and he will once he dismembers Hopkins at Yankee stadium.

All I can say is I'm English and have watched Calzaghes career from the very early days, when his star was rising, when he beat Eubank for the title and he was impressive that night even if Eubank wasn't the fighter he once was - Calzaghe took some monster shots towards the end of that fight and I really thought the guy was for real. Then he spent the best part of the next decade fighting hand picked opponents whilst talking **** about guys like Jones, Toney and Hopkins that actually talked the talk and walked the walk....I gradually came to dislike the guy, although he's nowhere near as big a ***** as his promoter. Hatton knew this about Warren which is why he ditched him and went after the big fights, because he wanted his place in history. He ultimately failed but I'll never disrespect the guy for trying. Calzaghe is a different kettle of fish, he never even tried....wasted talent. As I said before the fact that he's taking on a 43 year old and people are seeing it as a 'big fight' tells you all you need to know about Calzaghe. Just think, if he beats old Hopkins he'll be right up there with Jermain Taylor, YEAH, best fighter ever :patsch

That is just wrong, on so many levels. If my memory serves me well it was the Brits who'd watched Contender that were impressed with Manfredo while the Americans laughed their arses off at the choice of opponent - especially considering after Calzaghe beat Lacy he said he'd only be going for 'big' fights from now on....and then fought Bika and Manfredo. He's done this **** his whole career, he said the same when he beat the undefeated Mario Veit which looked impressive at the time, he talked of unifying and challenging the likes of Jones and Hopkins and what happened? He fought a list of bums and has-beens and then 'bravely' fought Veit AGAIN, in Germany - I can't remember anyone else that has ever rematched a guy that he beat inside a round whilst he was champ, can you?

Yeah Lacy was considered good, but look what he has done after Calzaghe, he almost lost to Tsypko. The Manfredo fight last saturday was a joke, that fight pretty much confirmed that Lacy is just a one dimensional hype job. Eubank was a little past his prime, and was never really considered a great fighter, but will just have to wait and see what Kessler does in the future to determine how good he is.

Why will he get props for beating up an old man :huh

As I see it he deserves the same amount of props as Holyfield got for beating up Larry Holmes and George Foreman, and slightly less props than Tyson got when he beat Holmes.

Hopkins really should be taking this fight - if he loses it doesn't really harm his legacy considering his age, but if he wins.....

    Ran from Johnson? :patsch:patsch

Blind hate, your opinion is not valid.

Ah right so Joe won the first 4 rounds against Reid before breaking his hand then?

Post all the :patsch :patsch 's that you like but the fact is that Calzaghe pulled out of fights with Glen Johnson, twice.

Blind hate? Nope, as I've already stated I was a Calzaghe fan but saw through the bull****. My 'invalid' opinion is based on watching him his whole career, I suspect yours is based on his career since the Lacy fight.

You still have to ask yourself how much of an effect Joe had on Lacy being like his is now (combining Jeff's recent injuries). I would also add that while Eubank was on the slippery slope post-Watson, I believe he was a great fighter (one whom I disliked a great deal) - at a time when there was enough talent in the UK at his weight to not worry too heavily about their state-side image, and you have to realise how big they were at the time in the UK (Benn, Eubank, Watson, et al were huge UK box-office).

Calzaghe has done all this in his career with a sorry ass promoter, Warren. Imagine if he had a good promoter.

Yeah, right. You seem to be forgetting that some of us actually watched those fights.

Nice insult though, just shows what kind of level I'm dealing with here. Have another beer it might improve your debating skills.

Calzaghes choice, no-one elses. I suspect if he'd had a decent promoter he'd have taken on Jones, Hopkins or Toney back in 2000 and got the **** beaten out of him. To be fair Warrens been smart and played the age card, and now Joes ready for a last big payday which is why he's finally making noises about Hopkins. All the uneducated will shout and scream about it but it means nothing.

He has been calling out Hopkins for at least 3 years! He told Hopkins 2 years ago he would fight him in his living room. Who cares Hopkins is old.
